Police say surveillance video shows 101-year-old being viciously assaulted

(Queens - WABC, March 9, 2007) - A 101-year-old woman on her way to church was attacked and robbed -- and police say she isn't the only victim.

Cops say the suspect attacked twice this week. His target: elderly women.
Eyewitness News reporter Jen Maxfield spoke with both victims and has the story from the Jamaica Estates section of Queens.

This cold blooded attacker isn't just targeting elderly women -- he's targeting elderly women with walkers. In two brutal attacks, this mugger got away with less than $40 dollars. But what he didn't know is that he was caught on camera.

"I'm a 101-years-old. How you going to run after a mugger?," said Rose Morat.

Rose Morat's face is battered and bruised after a violent struggle with a mugger in the lobby of her Queens apartment building. The assault was caught on videotape in disturbing detail.

We see Rose on her way to church with the help of a walker. The young man she thought was opening the door for her turns on her, punching her repeatedly in the face before he takes her purse and rummages through her pockets. Bleeding profously through her mouth, the century old woman musters the strength to try to get her purse back -- and that's when this heartless thief knocks her and her walker to the ground.

"I got a little angry ... and I said 'oh that so and so, I hope you get caught,'" Morat said.

As Rose's neighbors rushed to her aid, police say her attacker jumped on his pink bike and peddled over to the Commonlife Tower on 170th Street and found his second victim, 85-year-old Solange Elizee, who suffers from Parkinson's and also uses a walker.

The same mugger rode the elevator up with her, got off one floor below and ran up to Solange's door before she could get inside.

"He begun to kick me, beat me in my face ... a lot of blood coming out of my mouth," she said.

Solange's chin and arm were injured in the attack. But perhaps most upsetting, thieves stole this widow's wedding ring that she has worn for 60 years. Solange and Rose hope everyone takes a good look at this crook -- described as a black male in his 30s -- in the hopes that someone will turn him in before another elderly woman gets hurt.

Both victims spent time in the hospital this week, and both are expected to make full recoveries. But this attacker could not crush Rose Morat's spirit. She told police 'If I hadn't had both hips replaced, I would have chased after him myself.'

SURVEILLANCE footage of a 101-year-old woman with a walking frame being punched and mugged for $42 has caused outrage in the US.
Rose Morat was leaving her apartment block in suburban New York to attend Sunday mass when she was attacked.
"There has to be a special rung of hell for him," a police officer said of the attacker.
Ms Morat said the attacker seemed chivalrous at first, offering to help her to the street.
"He got up and said, 'I'll help you with your walker'," she said.
She replied: "No, thank you, I know how to handle myself.
"All of a sudden I got the bang and then I saw stars," she added, still nursing a fractured cheekbone.
She continued to fight back after he grabbed her around the neck and delivered three sharp jabs to her face.
Finally, in a chilling image caught by a surveillance camera, the mugger ended the attack with a knockout blow that floored her and sent her walker flying.
"I was on the floor. I looked up and he grabbed my bag," she said.
Ms Morat spent three days at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, suffering cuts and bruises.
The pensioner is a divorcee who has lived alone for 60 years.
The mugger, who has not been caught, later attacked an 85-year-old woman. This time he only made off with $41 and rode away on a red or pink bicycle.

Flood of tips on punk who beat senior

Outraged New Yorkers have been flooding police phone lines with "substantive" leads about a brutal attack on a 101-year-old Queens woman - along with creative ideas on what to do with the thug after he's caught.

"You better catch him before we do," one angry tipster said of the mugger caught on tape March 4 striking Rose Morat as the centenarian struggled to hold onto her purse.

Another caller suggested the mugger meet the same hanging fate as deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein - "but with barbed wire."

A female caller warned: "If I catch him, that [expletive], I'm going to mess him up." A male voice volunteered to "do to him what he did to her."

Another male caller urged prison-style justice, telling cops to "make sure every [person] in prison knows what he did."

In all, cops have fielded more than 1,000 calls - many offering "substantive" information that has helped them close in on a suspect, whom police also have linked to an attack on Elizee Solange, 85.

Solange, who was attacked as she entered her Jamaica home, was mugged about 30 minutes after Morat was.

"The fact that we are receiving this many calls is good. It shows that people know this number [(800) 577-TIPS]," said Sgt. Dan Edwards, commanding office of the crime stoppers unit.

Yesterday, a week after the heartless mugging, Morat sounded virtually unfazed by the beating that left her with a fractured cheek and other injuries that put her in the hospital for four days.

"I've been active all my life. I have a good working mind and I enjoy life. There's nothing unusual about it. You do your best and God takes care of the rest," she said from her Jamaica Estates apartment.

She was jumped as she made her way out of her building - using a walker - by a man who at first offered help. He swiped $33 from her purse after punching Morat repeatedly, knocking the knit cap from her head, and throwing her to the ground.

The retired telecommunications worker is already back to her routine of walking and doing leg lifts in the hallway outside her apartment.

Abdul Hallim, 47, a neighbor who helped her clean her bloodied face, said she was barely shaken after the attack.

"Even then her attitude was okay, and she was all right," he said.

"She's absolutely one of the most friendly people on the floor. Everyone knows and likes her. She's fiercely independent. Even after two full hip replacements, she manages to get around on her own."

Nigger mugs 101-year-old woman for 33 bucks

NEW YORK (AP) -- For a moment, the man in the grainy video looks like a good Samaritan holding the door open for an elderly neighbor. Then he turns and delivers three sharp punches to the 101-year-old woman's head.

"The next thing I knew, I had a big bang on the side of my face," said Rose Morat, who suffered a fractured cheekbone and lost her purse and $33 to the mugger.

"I'm quite sure that if it had happened when I was younger, I would have been after him," she said. "I'm a very strong woman. I've been that way my whole life."

Police said the same man is believed to have later attacked a second elderly woman in the neighborhood. Investigators were searching for a suspect Saturday.

"We are pulling out all the stops to find him," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement. "We want to stop him before he strikes again."

Morat said she was headed to church when she met the man in her lobby. He offered to help her make her way out, but she declined.

"I know how to handle myself," she said.

As Morat maneuvered her walker through the building's small vestibule, the man slowly put his bicycle against the wall, turned, and attacked her, the security video showed.

Her hat flew off, but she remained on her feet as the man removed her bag and felt her coat pockets.

Then, before making his escape, he punched her in the head again and shoved her to the ground.

Morat spent three days in the hospital.

The 85-year-old woman believed to be the mugger's second victim, Solange Elizee, told police she was punched and pushed to the floor outside her apartment door by a man who had initially offered to help her get home.

"I like to help old people," he said before turning violent, according to Elizee.

The man took her purse and got away with $32, police said.

"God saved my life," she said.

Mental patient eyed as evil thug

Investigators are eying a mental patient as the prime suspect in the brutal attacks on 101-year-old Rose Morat and another elderly woman in Queens, a police source said yesterday.

Detectives have not been able to question the suspect because he voluntarily checked himself into a psychiatric ward near the victims' homes, the source said.

Investigators were hoping last night that the suspect would voluntarily check out of the hospital so cops could interrogate him, the source said.

Police released few details about the suspect.

"Anyone who would do this to a little old lady has to be off their rocker, besides being just plain evil," the police source said.

New Yorkers were disgusted by the March 4 attacks and have been flooding the NYPD's hotline with tips about the suspect.

The cowardly mugger with a pink bicycle pummeled Morat as she walked out of her Jamaica Estates apartment building.

A surveillance video shows the mugger punching Morat, who uses a walker, three times in the head and taking her purse before knocking her to the ground. He fled with $33, police said.

On the same day, the hoodlum attacked 85-year-old Solange Elizee outside her Hillside home, punching her in the mouth and swiping her wedding band.

"I will be glad when they arrest him," Elizee said yesterday. "I am sick about that."

"I thank God all the time because I thought he was going to kill me."

MUG FIEND DRIVES OUT GRANNY, 85

An elderly victim of the same vicious mugger who beat up a 101-year-old grandmother last month said she's moving out of her Queens apartment because she fears another attack.

Solange Elizee, the 85-year-old who was one of two senior citizens beaten by a ruthless robber on March 4, is vacating her home of 20 years for new digs that promise peace of mind.

"Every time I go to the elevator, I don't feel good," Elizee said about her current building in Jamaica, where a still-at-large mugger attacked her inside her apartment, then stole $45 and her gold wedding ring.

The retired schoolteacher and grandmother of seven said she suffers panic attacks because of the lax security around her building. Her new home will be an assisted-living center in the same neighborhood with 24-hour guards.

The attacks on Elizee and Rose Morat, 101, whose mugging in the lobby of her Jamaica Estates apartment was caught on camera, triggered a citywide police manhunt. But hundreds of tips have yielded no suspect.

Morat said she, too, suffers nightmares from the incident but "I'm not frightened."
