Suspect Sought In Trolley Hate Crime Attack

San Diego police need your help to catch a suspect in a hate crime that happened on a trolley the night of Nov. 27.



The suspect is described as an African-American man between 5 feet 10 inches and six feet two inches, with an average build. His hair was in braids, and carrying a boom box.

Police say he got on the trolley at 32nd and Commercial streets.

They say he made racially-motivated remarks to a white man and physically attacked him.

SAN DIEGO -- A $10,000 reward was offered Thursday for information leading to the arrest of a man who assaulted another man on the San Diego Trolley last month.

The attack occurred about 8:40 p.m. Nov. 27 after a black male stepped onto the trolley, made eye contact with a white man and then made "racially motivated, derogatory" remarks, according to San Diego police.

The man continued to make the remarks while pacing back and forth on the eastbound trolley and turning up the volume on a boom box he carried, authorities said.

At the Euclid Avenue stop, the assailant punched the man in the head, knocking him down. He continued to hit the man in the face and head until he ran from responding trolley officers, police said.

The officers pepper-sprayed the assailant during a struggle outside of the trolley, but he was able to escape.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he got 13 stitches, police said.

The assailant is about 6 feet tall with an average build. He was last seen wearing red shorts and red and white Adidas shoes.

Police: Man In Custody In Hate Crime On Trolley

SAN DIEGO -- A Stockton man was in custody Friday, facing multiple battery counts, in connection with an allegedly race-motivated attack on a fellow trolley rider last month.

State agents took Morrise Raylee Janise, 27, into custody at his K Street house on a parole violation on Dec. 21, San Diego police reported.

Evidence found at the home linked Janise to the assault on the commuter tram, SDPD public information Officer Monica Munoz said.

The victim, a white man, alleged that Janise, who is black, directed ethnic insults at him while they were riding the light-rail line from Logan Heights to Lincoln Park the evening of Nov. 27.

"As the trolley continued traveling eastbound with several passengers on board, Janise became more agitated and began to pace inside the trolley," Munoz said. "Janise had a radio, and he turned the volume up while making racially motivated comments."

Janise allegedly jumped the victim as the trolley pulled into a Euclid Avenue transit station, knocking him to the floor and punching him in the face and head until security personnel intervened.

Following a scuffle with the officers, the assailant managed to escape, despite having been doused with pepper spray, Munoz said.

A citizen who saw a news report on the incident later came forward and provided information that led detectives to identify Janise as the alleged attacker.

So far, however, police have found no witnesses who can corroborate the victim's hate-crime allegation, Munoz said.
