BNP leader Nick Griffin arrested

Police confirmed a 45-year-old man had been arrested on Tuesday
The leader of the British National Party has been arrested as part of a police inquiry following the screening of a BBC documentary.
A party spokesman said Nick Griffin was arrested on Tuesday morning on suspicion of incitement to racial hatred.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they had arrested a 45-year-old man from outside their area.

BNP founding chairman John Tyndall was arrested on Sunday on the same charge.

Criminal damage

In July, the BBC documentary Secret Agent featured covertly-filmed footage of BNP activists.

Mr Griffin is the twe
lfth man to be arrested following the documentary.

Nine men from West Yorksh
ire and another man from Leicester have been arrested and freed on bail.

Seven of the men had been held variously in connection with suspected racially aggravated public order offences, conspiracy to commit criminal damage and possession of a firearm.

Two men, both from Keighley, were arrested in September on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.

A 24-year-old man from Leicester was detained on Monday on suspicion of incitement to racial hatred.

A BNP spokesperson said Mr Tyndall, from Brighton, was arrested following a speech he made in Burnley, Lancashire, and was released on police bail.

BNP head Griffin bailed by police

The leader of the British National Party has been released on police bail after being arrested following the screening of a BBC documentary.
A party spokesman said that Nick Griffin, 45, had been held on Tuesday morning on suspicion of incitement to commit racial hatred.

Mr Griffin said he believed his arrest was "politically motivated".

Three men have been charged with racially aggravated harassment as part of the police inquiry into the BNP.

The party's founding chairman, John Tyndall, was also arrested on Sunday.


Twelfth arrest

The police investigations started after the BBC's July screening of the Secret Agent documentary featuring covertly-filmed footage of BNP activists.

Mr Griffin was
the 12th man to be arrested following the documentary.

He was held at his family ho
me in Wales before being taken to Halifax police station for questioning.


On his release Mr Griffin claimed the party was being "demonised" by the Government which he said saw the BNP as a threat.

He said: "The police have nothing to do with this. The CPS, David Blunkett, John Prescott, Tony Blair are having a go at a dangerous political rival."


'Electoral chances'

Mr Griffin added: "The idea is I'm going to be back here in March and bailed until then. At that point (it) is coming up to a general election.

"It's to demonise us in our electoral chances. After that the CPS know the charges against me won't stick. They're going to be dropped quietly after the election."



A statement from West Yorkshire Police said enquiries into the activities of BNP members were ongoing.

Nick Griffin will appear at Leeds Magistrates Court on Thursday
British National Party leader Nick Griffin has been charged with four race hate offences, police said.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that Mr Griffin, 45, of Welshpool, was charged at Halifax police station on Wednesday.

He will appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Thursday accused of using words or behaviour intended or likely to stir up racial hatred.

Earlier, founding chairman John Tyndall was charged with inciting racial hatred during a speech in Burnley last year.

BNP activist Mark Collett, 24, has been charged with eight offences of inciting racial hatred.

Mr Griffin's arrest followed a West Yorkshire Police inquiry after the
BBC's The Secret Agent was aired last July.

Mr Tyndall was arres
ted in December following a speech he made in March 2004.

He was charged with two offences of using words or behaviour intended or likely to stir up racial hatred.

An estimated 130 people draped in Union and St George flags had gathered outside the West Yorkshire police station on Wednesday.

The BNP leader claimed after being released that his arrest had been "politically motivated".

He told supporters he had been charged for telling the truth and would use any trial to defend his party's beliefs.

Mr Tyndall, Mr Griffin and Mr Collett, of Leeds, are all due before Leeds magistrates on Thursday.

A 47-year-old Harrogate man was released from bail last week and no further action will be taken against him, police added.

Police had worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service, a spokesman said.

BNP leaders on race hate charges


Key figures in the British National Party (BNP) have been committed to stand trial on race hate charges.
Leader Nick Griffin, 45, and founding chairman John Tyndall, 70, face charges of using words or behaviour intended or likely to stir up racial hatred.

They were arrested, along with activist Mark Collett, after an investigation into the BBC film The Secret Agent.

They will appear at Leeds Crown Court on 21 July. Magistrates granted them unconditional bail on Thursday.

They could each face up to seven years in jail if found guilty.

Mr Griffin, of Powys, faces four counts of the offence relating to two separate incidents in January and May 2004.

Mr Tyndall, of Hove, East Sussex, faces two counts of the same offence in connec
tion with a speech made at a Burnley social club which featur
ed in the documentary.

Mr Collett, 24, of Rothley, Leicestershire, is accused of eight race hate offences.

Support for Nick Griffin and Mark Collett is coming in from around the globe. We are delighted to hear that Friends of Free Speech held a protest outside the British Consulate in Houston in Texas yesterday (Monday) and friends across America have helped raised hundreds of pounds for Free Speech funds.

In this speech which has been used as evidence for the prosecution, and shown to the jury in Leeds Crown Court, Nick tells the audience about the media circus over the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence and reports about allegations that he was not murdered by white racists at all, but by rival dru
