Despite state of the art technology, resources and manpower, Scotland Yard detectives yesterday admitted to being stumped in their bid to arrest a prolific burglar and sex offender with ancestral roots in the Caribbean.

e Superintendent Simon Morgan, of Britain"s Metropolitan Police Service, held a press briefing at the Police Administration Building, Sackville Street, Port-of-Spain, to appeal to the public for information which would lead to the suspect"s arrest.

Morgan said he and his team are in Trinidad to narrow down the list of people who could be the suspect, or related to the suspect, by using the latest forensic science techniques. They have identified the suspect by his DNA, which indicate an ancestral link to the Caribbean, particularly the Windward Islands.

'I wish to make it clear that although we are in Trinidad making this appeal, this does not mean that we believe this offender is in fact Trinidadian.

'This criminal operates in south London and has an intricate knowledge of the area and we believe that he resides in the United Kingdom but given his ancestral roots we believe that he may travel to this region at times, possibly visiting relatives, said Supt Morgan.

The su
spect, described as a black male, has sexually molested at least 98 people, 88 women and ten men, all of them white.

This type of offender is known as a gerontophile (one who seeks sexual gratification from the elderly).

Supt Morgan has offered a reward of £40,000 (TT$400,000) for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the offender. He added that all calls will be treated with the strictest confidence and said it would be possible to eliminate the innocent because the police have the offender"s DNA.

The Scotland Yard officers have named the operation to catch the serial rapist 'Operation Minstead.

It is the largest hunt for a serial rapist that Scotland Yard has ever mounted and began in 1998 following the forensic link of two rapes.

All the offences were committed in the southeast area of London.
