Football players arrested on rape charges

A police incident report on the University at Albany"s website has confirmed two men have been arrested for a possible rape on campus over the weekend. Lorenzo Ashbourne, 18, of Georgia, and Julius Harris, 18, of Florida were arrested early this morning. Both are on the football team.

The woman told police she was raped inside the school's Indian Quad dormitory. The Albany County District Attorney's sex crime unit is also investigating.

Julius Harris was ushered into Guilderland Town Court in handcuffs Thursday. Harris barely said a word during his hearing in which bail was set at $50,000. He was also issued an order of protection and told not to go near the alleged victim.

Teammate Lorenzo Ashbourne is also charged with rape. He posted $50,000 bail earlier in the day. All of this just days before the football team's homecoming game. The distraction is not lost on head Coach Bob Ford.

Ford said, "It's like many other challenges I faced in coaching. Tough tough loss and try to bounce back, try to get ready after a great win, try t
o get ready, after the death of parents, those are all challenges. And I think the squad has accepted the challenge. I think they've had a great week, and I think we're ready to go."

According to the alleged victim's statement to police, Julius Harris, Lorenzo Ashbourne and Charles Guadagno repeatedly raped her when she was drunk last weekend. Coach Ford wouldn't comment on the investigation but said he's re-emphasized off-the-field conduct to his players. But it's not the first time he's had the conversation.

Ford said, "The university has some formal programs we do for young men and young women and some programs for student athletes. And in addition you talk, you talk. You can't talk to them enough, so I talk to this football squad all the time about things I think are important."

Harris' case will now be in the hands of the Albany County District Attorney's office and will be heard by a grand jury. The same is expected to happen for both Lorenzo Ashbourne and Charles Guadagn
o. Meanwhile, the football team will continue to keep their focus on the field, even though the spotlight may be on this high-profile case.
