Ex-ASU star guilty of 2 rapes

Maricopa County Superior Court jury on Wednesday convicted a former Arizona State University football player of raping two women in 2003.

Mitchell Dehaven Freedman, 30, a safety who earned the nickname "Fright Night" because of the ferocity of his tackles, was found guilty of 15 counts, including five counts of sexual assault, four counts of sexual abuse, kidnapping, aggravated assault and armed robbery. He could face more than 100 years in prison for the sexual assault charges alone.

ases, one from 2003 and one that allegedly took place in 1992, when Freedman was 16.

The rapes he was found guilty of occurred in September and October 2003, in West and North Central Phoenix. In each case, a woman who had had an argument with her boyfriend and was walking in her residential neighborhood after 4 p.m. to clear her head was accosted at gunpoint, sexually abused and raped repeatedly.

Freedman was photographed by a surveillance camera minutes after the second rape as he left a convenience store, where he had used the woman's debit card. The victims' belongings were found in his bedroom, and Freedman's DNA was obtained from both women, in one case from saliva left on the woman's breast.

PHOENIX -- A former Arizona State University football player appeared in court for sentencing Friday.In June, Mitchell "Fright Night" Freedman was found guilty of raping women at gunpoint.Freedman was convicted on 15 counts, including kidnapping, theft, aggravated assault, sexual assault and sexual abuse.

The former ASU star allegedly raped at least four women over the span of a decade.On Friday, a judge sentenced Freedman on 14 of the 15 counts for a total sentence of 108 years to be served consecutively.
