Police: Man Kills Wife, Children Over Household Chores
Suspect Argued With Wife Over His Chores POSTED: 7:33 am EST December 15, 2005 http://www.nbc4.com/news/5540784/detail.html FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A man accused of killing his family told police he beat and strangled his wife and killed their three children after the couple argued about him doing chores around the house, according to a court record. Police found Simon Rios, 33, on the front porch of his home on the city's south side after receiving a suicide call about 5 a.m. Tuesday. Inside the home, officers found a puddle of blood on the living room floor, a probable cause affidavit said. They found Rios' wife, Ana Casas, and the couple's three children dead in a bedroom. Rios pleaded not guilty Wednesday to four preliminary counts of murder and two c ounts of moving a body. He was being held without bond in the Allen County Jail. Allen County Coroner E. Jon Brandenberger said autopsies found that Casas, 28, had died from blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation and that 4-year-old Katherinne G. Rios, 20-month-old Thannya Karolinna Rios and 10-year-old Liliana Rios Casas had been strangled. Rios told police he and his wife argued after Casas arrived home from work about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and that he hit her with a steel pipe, then strangled her with an extension cord, the police affidavit states. He then strangled Katherinne with his hands, the affidavit states, and used an extension cord to strangle the other two girls. He placed the three children on the bed together and pulled his wife's body into the room, acco rdin g to the document. Police spokesman Mike Joyner said Wednesday that he spoke with prosecutors and there was no indication they would seek the death pe nalty. The Associated Press left a message seeking comment with Allen County prosecutor's office spokeswoman Robyn Niedzwiecki. Neighbor Nancy Gater said Simon Rios worked at a factory but had lost his job this year and spent some time in Mexico. She said the family had moved to the house about four years ago. The discovery of the bodies came a day after police and the FBI searched homes in the south side neighborhood for clues about 10-year-old Alejandra Gutierrez, who disappeared Thursday on her way to a nearby school bus stop. Joyner said police did not find a connection between the two cases when they questioned Rios, but they will continue to consider him as a possible suspect in the girl's disappearance. Rios was convicted in Allen County of a 2003 misdemeanor domestic battery charge. The cou rt ordered Rios to stay away from the victim but it was lifted in July 2003, according to court records. Records were unclear who the victim was. Friends were shocked by the deaths and said they had seen no signs of trouble. Adolfo Puebla, who said he is the godfather of the youngest girl, said Rios and his family attended a birthday party Puebla and his wife hosted Saturday. They left laughing, he said. Michael Guzman called Rios "a great friend of mine" and said he had never heard Rios raise his voice to his children or speak ill of his wife. "Everybody who knows him loves the guy," he said. |

![]() Rios ![]() Alejandra Gutierrez ![]() The Rios family Police believe girl was raped Alejandra Gutierrez was abducted, then assaulted before she was killed. By Kevin Leiningerkleininger@news-sentinel.com Police believe Alejandra Gutierrez was raped by Simon Rios and a juvenile before her strangled body was dumped in a Delaware County woods hours after her Dec. 8 abduction, The News-Sentinel r r has learned. Officials still have not identified the 10-year-old girl's killer. But neighbor Rios ' who has already been charged with killing his wife and three children Dec. 13 ' has told autho rities he and 17-year-old Juan Rosales abducted Alejandra in Rios' van and raped her before she was killed, several court and police sources confirm. Police found the body of a young Hispanic girl in a field Monday afternoon near Albany, but an autopsy could not be performed until the frozen body thawed. Thursday, Delaware County Coroner James Clevenger Jr. confirmed the body as Alejandra's and the cause of death. Officials said the girl appeared to have been in the woods at least a week, given the lack of snow under the body. Mike McAlexander, deputy Allen County prosecutor, said criminal charges in connection with Alejandra's death probably will be filed in Delaware County ' indicating officials believe the killing occurred there. That may not happen until next week, however, said Delawar e C oun ty Sheriff George Sheridan. Alejandra was last seen leaving her home in the 4000 block of Clinton Street about 9:50 a.m. Dec. 8. Normally, she would have boarded the bus for Maplewood Elem entary School two hours earlier, but Fort Wayne Community Schools had a regularly scheduled delay day. Rios' home at 4122 is just two blocks from Alejandra's bus stop. Rios, 33, told police he and Rosales, who lived in the 4000 block of South Calhoun Street just blocks from Alejandra, dragged her into the van about 10 a.m. and drove south. Rosales raped the girl first, then Rios, sources said. During the investigation of the girl's disappearance, tracking dogs led police to Rios' house. Rosales' relatives declined to comment Thursday, although neighbors said police had been to the Calhoun Street house earlier this week and left with bags of what they presumed to be evidence. A Fort Wayne Community Schools official said Rosales had a lengthy discipline record before dropping out of South Side High School in Janu ary, although the official did not believe any of his offenses were serious. Because Rosales is a juvenile, officials will not comment on his case. But McAlexander said youths a t least 16 can be charged as adults without a waiver hearing in connection with such serious charges as murder and rape. Rios is being held in the Allen County Jail after being charged with killing his wife and children. According to court records, Rios hit his wife in the head with a steel pipe and strangled her before also strangling their daughters. A plea of not guilty was entered on Rios' behalf Tuesday. If convicted of killing his family, he could be sentenced to up to 260 years in prison. Whether Alejandra's disappearance and death was connected to the slayings of Rios' wife, Ana Casas, and their three young daughters is still unknown. <a href='http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/news/local/13474599.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/...al/13474599.htm</a > |
