New York: Black rapist told police he had planned to kill a white woman

The District Attorney's Office would seek a grand jury indictment charging Phillip Grant, 43, with second-degree murder as a hate crime.
Grant is black; the victim was white. A hate-crime conviction would increase his minimum sentence. Grant, registered as a Level 3 --or high-risk --sex offender who served 23 years in Sing Sing prison on rape and assault convictions, was picked up a few minutes after police found Concetta Russo Carriero unconscious and bleeding from two stab wounds. She died less than an hour later.

Abdulla Abraham, an airport shelter resident who knows Grant, said the suspect often had talked about finding a white
woman to take care of him. "He was always talking about getting a white girl to live with. He got tired of living at the shelter," Abraham said. "He was obsessed with that for a while, getting a white woman who had money that he could settle down with. He was determined to find one."

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ A homeless black man told police on videotape that he was fighting a race war and killed a 56-year-old woman at a Westchester County mall last week because she was white.

The man, Phillip Grant, 43, appeared
in shackles and a bulletproof vest in a White Plains courtroom for a felony hearing Tuesday. In the 45-minute videotape played during the hearing, Grant told police "all I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die."

He claimed Connie Russo Carriero "was not an innocent victim _ because she was white."

Carriero, a legal secretary and mother of two grown children, was stabbed to death while walking to her car at the Galleria Mall parking garage. She was buried Tuesday.

Grant, a convicted rapist, was charged with second-degree murder and weapon possession in the knife attack. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 25 years to life in prison.

On the tape, Grant said he was sick of being harassed on the street for being a registered high-level sex offender. He said he wanted to draw attention to the fact that Westchester County never helped him with his mental problems.

He also told police he was not remorseful for the killing and would hurt white people again
if he could.

He told the judge in court Tuesday that he had wanted a journalist and his lawyer at the videotaping but they weren't there.

The judge ordered the case to go before a grand jury.

July 6, 2005 -- A racist ex-con confessed that he fatally stabbed a beloved mother of two at a White Plains mall because he wanted "to kill a white person."
"She was not innocent. She was white," convicted rapist Phillip Grant confessed in a chilling videotaped statement to cops that was played in White Plains City Court yesterday --the same day victim Concetta Russo Carriero was laid to rest.

The 43-year-old homeless man told cops he had never laid eyes on Russo Carriero, 56, before he stabbed her in the chest twice last Wednesday on the seventh level of the Galleria mall garage.

"All I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes, and she ha

d to die . . . I didn't care, as long as she was white," he said.

"I wanted to kill someone who represented the white l
ifestyle."

Grant said he became a racist after his July 2003 release from Sing Sing, where he spent 24 years for three Bronx rapes and for attacking another inmate with a pitchfork.

People in White Plains called him "rape boy" and "n- - - - -," he said.
