ANTI-JEWISH CRIMES SOARING IN THE CITY

March 5, 2004 -- The number of anti-Semitic incidents in the city jumped during the last three months of 2003, reaching the highest point in three years.

There were 57 anti-Semitic incidents, primarily consisting of spray-painted swastikas and anti-Jewish slurs, from October to December - the highest number of anti-Semitic crimes since 2000, according to a study by Rep. Anthony Weiner to be rel
ased today.

There were 31 incidents in the same period in 2002.

"Like any other crime trend, we need to acknowledge the problem and take steps to stamp it out," Weiner said.

Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman said it was "attributable to what's going on in the world" - increased anti-Semitism due in large part to the strain in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

The troubling spike began when a suspicious fire on Oct. 4 in Williamsburg left eight Hasidic families homeless and came to a close when a 12-inch gold-colored swastika was discovered spray-painted on a stanchion supporting an elevated subway track in Sheepshead Bay.



Weiner, who obtained his data from the NYPD and state Division of Criminal Justice Services, said anti-Semitic crimes plummeted in January 2004, when only three incidents were reported, but rose again in February.

ector Michael Cohen responded that anti-Semitic hate crimes fell overall in 2003, compared to 2002, adding that the police "don't see a long-term trend" developing.

Foxman said the ADL is "satis
fied with the way the Police Department is handling these incidents."

Mayor Bloomberg weighed in on the report by lambasting Weiner - a possible 2005 mayoral contender - for attempting to make political hay out of a sensitive issue.

"To try to make politics out of bias crimes is ridiculous," the mayor fumed. "Given the source, you should expect that it is one of these statistics that is either made up, [or] maybe [he] picked one day."

Bloomberg added that there have been 10 percent fewer anti-Jewish incidents in the first two months of this year than in 2003.

Weiner responded by saying that Bloomberg needs to "relax"
and that the report is not an attack on his administration.

"Attacking the messenger may be good politics, but it doesn't do justice to a serious issue," Weiner said. <

Swastika & sick graffiti defile Long Island synagogue

Brazen vandals defaced the door of a Long Island synagogue with a swastika - then came back hours later and painted even more sickening graffiti, congregation leaders said.

Obscenities and hateful phrases such as "Heil Hitler" and "Rot in hell" were spray-painted on the Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore early yesterday. Rocks also were thrown through two windows, leaving the Plandome synagogue's members shaken.

"Last night, when it was on one door, I thought criminal mischief," said Executive Director Sylvia Jacobs. "This morning, I am physically sick over this because now it's not just criminal mischief."

A cantor arriving for services discovered the swastika on a door around 7:45p.m. Friday. Police investigated, then canvassed the scene again around midnight and saw no further damage.

But when a cop returned at 6a.m., additional ugly messages were scrawled all over a protected courtyard.

Rabbi Lee Friedlander said members were completely shocked because they've never been targeted in 15 years at the location.

Jacobs said she was not looking for vengeance against the vandals.

"We really want this to be educational, that bias is not gone in the United States, be it Muslim, black, Jewish," she said.

The Nassau County Police Department said it was investigating the incident and asked anyone with information to call (800) 244-TIPS.

Jewish Couple Shocked To Find Home Scrawled With Swastikas

Allan Schwarz opens the door to his property in Bowmanville and immediately starts sobbing. His wife, Marion, walks behind him and as she scans the room, she travels back in time, all the way to Nazi Germany in the 30s. The Jewish couple [claim to have] lost family members in the concentration camps that marked one of history's darkest periods, and now the memories are flooding back. Together they stare at a giant swastika spray painted on the wall, overwhelmed with fury and disbelief.



Their home, which they've owned for 15 years and had been renting out to the same man for the last 10, has been virtually destroyed. Drywall has been torn from the ceiling and holes litter the walls. But it's the symbols of hate and intolerance that are most damaging. Anti-Semitic scrawls of 'k*ke' and 'white power' are everywhere.

"The symbols to me meant the family I lost in Nazi Germany," Marion says. "And the thought that somebody would do this."

"Every time we come in here and I see that symbol and the 'white power' and 'f*ck Jews'. And the damage. Look at the damage that's been done here. For what reason?" her husband adds with an incredulous expression.

The man who had been renting the house recently began having problems paying the rent. After numerous cheques bounced, the Schwarz's began the process of evicting him. When they arrived at the home Tuesday to change the locks, the tenant was gone and they discovered the state of the property.

They were also perturbed to learn that the incident was being treated as a simple case of mischief, rather than the far more serious offence of a hate crime.

"For a hate crime, you need more components to be brought in," explains Sgt. Paul McCurbin of York Regional Police.

But to the Schwarz's, hate is all they see when look around their destroyed property.

"What else would it be when you have sayings like 'k*ke,'" demands Marion. "Is that not a hate crime?"

Police Discover Swastika Cut In Cornfield

A New Jersey State Police helicopter on a routine maintenance mission discovered a large swastika cut in a cornfield in Washington Township, Mercer County.



The swastika, which is only visible from the air, was located off of Hankins Road near where similar swastikas were found in July 1998 and June 1999.
Investigators found that the most recent swastika appeared to have been hand-cut and covered an area of several acres.

No arrests have been made in either previous case.

The case is being investigated by the Washington Township Police Department, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, and the New Jersey State Division of Criminal Justice.

Two Brooklyn synagogues sprayed with swastikas

Twisted vandals spray-painted swastikas and hate messages on two synagogues and a number of other buildings and cars in a Brooklyn neighborhood last night, police said.

The foot-square Nazi symbol was painted in black atop the staircases to Congregation B'nai Avraham and the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue on Remsen St. in Brooklyn Heights sometime after 9 p.m., they said.

The foyer of a four-story apartment building at 45 Columbia Place, about a half mile away, was defaced with a 4-foot swastika under which was scrawled the message, "Kill Jews."

At least one other building and two cars were spray-painted on the two blocks.

Police said they had no suspects but were investigating.

Kevin Carberry, a sixtysomething real estate agent who found a swastika on his building on Columbia Place, said the vandalism didn't make sense.

"It's irrational and it's sad, but I don't think it has anything to do with me. I'm Irish. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen anything like this," he said.

Carberry and other victims suspected the vandals were teens out to cause trouble rather than true hatemongers.

"As for my place, I think I was just next in line," he said. (What? No shamrocks?)

Search continues in Brooklyn for swastika-spraying vandals

The NYPD turned out in force yesterday after hate-spewing vandals covered a Brooklyn neighborhood with nearly two dozen swastikas and plastered cars with flyers touting "Israel Land of Pigs" and "All Jews Die."

Twenty extra detectives, along with NYPD hate crime investigators and uniformed cops, swarmed Brooklyn Heights after residents discovered black swastikas painted on Congregation B'nai Avraham and Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, both on Remsen St.

"I think the president of Iran's visit to New York has spurred hatemongers to come out of the closet and do these hateful acts of anti-Semitism," said Rabbi Aaron Raskin of Congregation B'nai Avraham.

The synagogue's security cameras had run out of tape and did not catch the vandals as they attacked during the High Holy Days.

"I have numerous [congregants] whose parents are survivors of the Holocaust, and the swastika represents the deaths of 6 million people," Raskin said. "But God is protecting us." (And the 6 million who didn't die.)

The racist scrawls - a mix of black-paint swastikas and handwritten flyers - were discovered at 19 locations along Remsen, Columbia and Joralemon Sts., as well as the Palmetto Playground and Sidney Place.

A brownstone at 81 Remsen St. had both a black swastika and an SS logo painted on the steps. The Schutzstaffel, or SS, was the Nazi secret police.

The homeowner didn't want to talk with reporters, but was clearly shaken.

The disturbing markings were discovered as state police in New Jersey revealed that a large swastika had been sliced in a Mercer County cornfield.

Neither Brooklyn synagogue's security cameras caught the vandals at work, but NYPD experts were enhancing footage taken from businesses throughout the area. At least one camera's photos looked hopeful, a source said.

A City Hall spokesman said that, aside from the synagogues, there was no indication Jewish homes or cars were targeted.

"The city will not tolerate incidents like this. This is not just an attack on the Jewish community in Brooklyn Heights but on the city as a whole," said Nazli Parvizi, head of the Mayor's Office of Community Assistance.

So far this year, 81 of the city's 192 hate crimes - or 42% - were anti-Semitic. During the same period last year 79 of the 181 bias crimes were against Jews, or 43%.

Brooklyn Heights residents were shocked and saddened by the twisted graffiti. "My reaction is that it's so insane," said Heights resident Amy Shire, 48, who is Jewish. "This is a neighborhood of dialogue, of mosques, synagogues and churches. That makes it even more sad."

Oakland Hills Woman Victim Of Hate Crime To Car

OAKLAND Authorities are investigating a hate crime in the Oakland Hills, where a black woman discovered her car vandalized and painted with racial slurs, Nazi signs, and the words “white power.”�”�



The neighborhood of condos and apartments in the area was shaken up by the sight of the car.

It was parked on Canyon Oak Drive when the vandals spray-painted it with hangman nooses, swastikas and phrases and slashed all four tires and dented its roof. The victim has no idea why she was targeted, according to Oakland Police Sgt. Rebecca Campbell.

"She told me she hasn't gotten into any arguments with anyone, doesn't owe anyone any money, and has no idea why someone would single her out to vandalize her vehicle like this," said Campbell.

A similar hate crime took place about six miles away a few weeks ago. In that incident, items in front of a home were also spray-painted with stick men and swastikas.

"We have less than five a year on an average, and to have two hate crimes within such a short time period, both with spray paint and involving Nazi type comments, is unusual for Oakland," Campbell said.

No one has been arrested in either case and police are not sure whether the incidents are related.
