FRESNO, Calif. -- Police are investigating the rape of an 11-year-old girl that may have involved as many as 10 men in Fresno.

Police have arrested two men and identified eight others as persons of interest. They said most or all are football players at either Fresno City College or Reedley College.

Police said the victim -- a runaway from a group home -- went to an apartment in Fresno Saturday night to visit an acquaintance. While she was there, she was sexually assaulted multiple times by several men, police said.

The child then fled the apartment and sought help from a couple on the street, who called police.

tt, 19, are each being held on $100,000 bail and were charged with child molestation with a victim under 14 and oral copulation with a victim under 18.

Police said both were students at Reedley and may have been in the process of transferring to Fresno City. Both were being held Sunday at Fresno County Jail on $100,000 bail.

The rape allegedly took place in housing arranged by the Fresno City College football team.

Officials at both colleges could not be reached for comment.

Police say the suspects, 20-year-old Mackey Davis and 19-year-old Eddie Scott have ties to the well-known football programs at Fresno City College and Reedley College.

Officials say the victim is an 11-year-old runaway who went to the apartments Saturday night alone to meet an aquaintance. Police say when she got
there, she became the victim of a sexual assault that involved as many as 10 men. Police say many of these men are either current or former football players for Fresno City College or Reedley College.

Police are questioning four men of interest and looking for another four.

"There has been evidence obtained at the location which substantiates the victim's account that there was a sexual assault that occured," said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

Both Reedley College and Fresno City College have long been considered two of the best JC football programs in the entire country. Reedley College coach Mike White had no comment Sunday night and FCC coach Tony Caviglia did not return messages left on his cell phone.

Action News learned that top administraters from both schools planned to meet Sunday evening to discuss what course of action to take next.

Fresno police say as many as 10 men ? most of them current or former football players at local junior colleges ? sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl.

Two of the men, Mackey Lee Davis, 20, and Eddie Scott, 19, were arrested Saturday night at the west-central Fresno apartment where the assault allegedly occurred. They face two felony sex charges, including child molestation.

Seven other players went to the Fresno Police Department on Sunday to meet with officers and possibly to give statements about the incident, according to a local attorney.

Police Chief
Jerry Dyer said the current or former players are from Reedley College and Fresno City College.

Both of the men arrested Saturday had played football for Reedley College. One apparently played for two years and is now taking a class at Fresno City College, said attorney Michael Idiart, who counseled the seven other players before their coach took them to the Police Department. The other may have played one season, then transferred to Fresno City College, he said.

Scott is listed on Reedley College's Web site as a 6-foot-3 wide receiver.

Dyer said other arrests are likely in the case he described as "tragic" and "disturbing."

"It's a tragedy on two fronts," Dyer said. "Number one is that you have an 11-year-old victim that was obviously taken advantage of by a number of individuals and sexually assaulted. What heightens the tragedy is the fact that these are individuals that we believe to be attending our loca
l colleges and involved in our athletic program, playing football for at least one of these colleges."

The incident, Dyer said, was reported at 9 p.m. at the Villa Hermosa apartments at 2130 N. Marks Ave., just north of McKinley Avenue.

Scott's girlfriend called police after running from the apartment, said Villa Hermosa resident Nicole Smith, 27, who said she has befriended some of the players within the past month.

"She ran downstairs crying, and she got on her cell phone," said Smith, who was sitting on a nearby bench watching her children play.

Police said the girl also left the apartment after the incident, approached a couple walking near Clinton and Marks avenues and told them what had happened. The couple flagged down a police officer.

Dyer did not release details about the alleged assault, other than to say that

the girl ran away from a northeast Fresno group home days ago and knew someone at the players' apartment. She went there voluntarily, Dyer s
aid.

The girl was examined by doctors at University Medical Center in Fresno and interviewed by police detectives.

Officers searched the apartment and recovered evidence that Dyer said supports the alleged victim's story and helped identify the other people involved.

Tony Caviglia, football coach at Fresno City College, referred questions to Fresno City College President Ned Doffoney.

His coaching counterpart at Reedley College, Michael White, said he had no comment when reached by phone Sunday.

Doffoney said he spoke to Dyer by phone Sunday afternoon and later called Reedley College President Barbara Hioco.

"Certainly we're concerned about this very serious set of charges and allegations that we became aware of this afternoon," Doffoney said.

Idiart said Caviglia called him Sunday afternoon to ask if he would meet with the seven players at Fresno City College. Idiart, whose son played for Caviglia in 2001 and 2002, agreed.

He spoke to the players for
a half-hour in a conference room at the college, explaining their rights and answering questions.

"They wanted to know if something happened, and if they were simply there, if they could get in trouble," Idiart said, adding that some of the players were concerned about their football careers.

Afterward, the players got into the coach's sport utility vehicle and followed Idiart to the police station.

"The last I saw, they were all sitting there in the lobby and the coach was talking with the chief of police," Idiart said.

Smith, who has lived at Villa Hermosa for two years, said she met the alleged victim Saturday afternoon. The girl had been hanging out with some teenage boys who took her to the players' apartment, she said.

The girl told Smith she was turning 18 soon; Smith said she told the girl she didn't believe her.

"She was like, 'Nuh-uh, I'm 17, fitting to be 18 in a month or two,'" Smith said.

Smith said t
hat the girl, who is about 5-foot-5 with dark, shoulder-length hair, appears older than her age. "She looked a little mature," she said. "She didn't look 11. She was a cute little girl."

The football players occupy two of the complex's apartments. The apartments are separated by a courtyard. Five live in the second-floor apartment where the alleged assault occurred; three others live in a bottom-floor apartment about 50 yards away, Smith said. Two additional players ? it's not clear where they would live ? arrived during the past weekend.

Smith said some of the players are originally from Florida, but they played in Memphis, Tenn., last season.

They all moved into the complex within the past month and were excited about the upcoming season, Smith said.

"They were just getting ready for school to get started ? and the season," she said.

Some of the players showed Smith video of their past games and scrapbooks that included newspaper articles about their games an
d accomplishments.

Over the past two weeks, two or three players went for evening runs to get in shape. They also went to a local gym, according to Smith.

"For the time they've been here, they haven't thrown any wild parties," she said. "They haven't been doing anything crazy. They stay in the apartment. ? I feel bad for them. That's just their life thrown away for something that childish."
