(New York -WABC, June 13, 2006) - A huge police search is on for the man who stabbed a tourist from Texas on the subway on the Upper West Side Tuesday afternoon. The victim is in critical condition.

The drama unfolded on the 'C' line between 103rd and 135th Streets.
Police spent much of Tuesday night searching Central Park and in the subways for the stabbing suspect.

According to police, the stabbing happened about 3:30 p.m. They say a male passenger, described as a short black male in his early 20s wearing all black, was exiting the subway car when he suddenly reached over and attacked another passenger.

Eyewitness News has learned that t
he victim, a young Asian man, thought he had been punched in the stomach. But when he looked down, we're told, blood proved that he had been stabbed.

The victim was taken off the subway and transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in the intensive care unit.

The victim and the perpetrator are not believed to have been known to each other. The perpetrator remains at large and the investigation is continuing.

The police began an intensive search for the attacker. Witnesses said that he and the victim had exchanged no words before he suddenly lashed out and that the attack did not appear to be part of a robbery. At least four other people were in the car, the last one on the train, at the time, the police said.
Mr. McCarthy and his girlfriend, Ganda Krisananuwatara, 20, were on the second day of a planned two-week vacation in New York. "Everyone was so excited," Ms. Krisananuwatara said in an interview. "They told me to take pictures — now I'll have the most terrible story when I get back."
The two left for Washington on Saturday morning, then came to
the New York metropolitan area, where they were staying in Connecticut with one of Mr. McCarthy's friends.
Mr. McCarthy's parents were planning to travel from Houston to New York this morning. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has offered them free hotel rooms in the city, according to Marcus McCarthy, an uncle of Mr. McCarthy's who lives in Katy, Tex.
The attacker was described as a black man in his 20's about 5 feet 5 inches tall, dressed all in black and wearing a baseball cap. He was still at large last night.
"It seemed totally unprovoked," said an investigator. "As far as we know now, he walks up, makes a motion that's he's going to hit him. He's got the thing in his hand. He cuts him. And then he leaves."

(New York -WABC, June 14, 2006) - Police believe a slew of stabbings in Manhattan over the last 24 hours are the work of a homeless jig with a knife, and tonight he's in custody.



The latest attack happened at 4:15 a.m. in Times Square at Broadway and 47th Street. Two women were stabbed. About an hour earlier, at 3:00 a.m. there was another stabbing, this one on a subway platform at Sixth Avenue and 49th Street.

But police suspect the stabbing spree began more than 24 hours ago when a tourist was attacked on a 'C' train at 110th Street. We have two reports on the stabbings.

Police say they have a confession, a palm print and also visual identification linking the suspect to the attacks. What they're not sure of exactly what triggered all of this. Although three of the four victims were tourists, they have no reason to believe the suspect was targeting people from out of town.

The crime spree ended with Kenny Alexis sitting calmly in a police van, but investigators say for 12 hours the 21-year-old spread violence in Midtown and uptown, wielding an eight-inch knife.

In all four people were stabbed including three tourists.

Ray Kelly, NYC Police Commissioner: "The suspect has made admissions in the stabbing of the young women this morning and the young man on the 'C' train yesterday afternoon."

Alexis was arrested this morning after allegedly stabbing two Canadian tourists in Times Square. The 22 and 25-two year-old women were walki
ng from their hotel when Alexis allegedly stabbed them in the back.

Police say an hour earlier Alexis had stolen water and beer at knife point from a deli in Columbus Circle and stabbed a 30-year-old man on a subway platform in Rockefeller Center after demanding his cell phone.

The crime spree started with yesterday's stabbing of a tourist from Houston on a 'C' train on the Upper West Side. Police say Alexis' palm print has been found in the subway car.

Alexis is homeless and was arrested for attempted assault and harassment in April. In Boston he's been arrested for criminal trespass, criminal mischief and shoplifting. Despite the violence, the police commissioner stressed the subways are safe and called the crimes an abberation.

Ray Kelly, NYC Police Commissioner: "When you get four and a half million people a day into the system, every once in a while a really bizarre thing can happen."

Two of the three stabbing victims from overnight remain hospitalized. In fac
t one of the Canadian tourists is scheduled to undergo surgery for a stab wound to her abdomen.

In the meantime charges against Alexis are pending as lineups continue.

We move now to St. Lukes Hospital where Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen has more on the victim stabbed on the 'C' train.

This is a PR disaster for New York City. Papers across the country and around the world will carry the headline 'tourists stabbed,' this at a time when the city is trying to convince people to come to New York City, that it's safe here.

But this man was just minding his business on the 'C' train in the middle of the afternoon when someone stabbed him. A frightened girlfriend, who witnessed it all, stood outside St. Lukes Hospital today.

Ganda Krisanamuwatara told us how her boyfriend, Christopher McCarthy, was attacked on the 'C' train. They missed their stop yesterday and so they turned around and boarded a southbound 'C.' That's when the suspect stood up and plunged a
knife into Chris' chest, for no apparent reason.

Ganda Krisanamuwatara, Victim's Girlfriend: "I read in the paper yesterday morning, the headline was like 'New York crime rate dropping,' and I'm like 'huh really?' and then this happens and I don't believe that anymore."

Ganda and Chris are from Houston, here on a two week vacation. They had only been here two days when Chris ended up bleeding on a train, rushed to the hospital, badly hurt.

Joseph McCarthy, Victim's Father: "My son has forgiven his attacker in hopes that he can get help."

Clearly emotional, his parents flew in from Texas today to be at his bedside.

Joseph McCarthy, Victim's Father: "He says he doesn't understand, he didn't try to rob him or anything, says he would have been willing to give him whatever he needed, his camera if he wanted it, wallet."

Even though major crime is down nearly 27 percent in the subway system, this kind of random attack on a tourist can have a chilling effe
ct on potential visitors.

Christopher McCarthy's condition has been improved from critical to stable. Doctors say they expect him to make a full recovery.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Police suspect a knife-wielding homeless man went on a rampage, stabbing four people in a bloody, 12-hour span, including two Canadian tourists and a Texas man, before police finally nabbed him early Wednesday.

Kenny Alexis, 21, was taken into custody about 4:15 a.m. outside a fast-food restaurant in midtown Manhattan shortly after the two women, both from Montreal, were stabbed, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Police said Alexis had in his possession the knife used in the attack on the two women an
d investigators were attempting to link it to two separate subway ambushes that took place earlier.

Kelly said Alexis admitted to stabbing the Canadians and the young man from Texas, who was in critical condition.

The commissioner said Alexis wielded the same knife during a separate incident Wednesday at a market in which no one was injured. A store employee whom Alexis threatened identified the weapon, Kelly said.

Charges were pending against Alexis, who was living in a shelter on Manhattan's West Side. Police, who are still investigating the attacks, said Alexis had been arrested previously on a number of charges in New York and Boston.

Police (in between eating a dozen sugar donuts and having a circle jerk and celebrating diversity) were trying to figure out the motive behind the violent crime spree.

"There's no indication at this time," Kelly told reporters at a Wednesday afternoon news conference at police headquarters. (caution, poli

Three of the victims remained in the hospital Wednesday afternoon. The fourth, one of the Canadians, has been treated and released. All the victims are expected to survive.

The last attack occurred about 4 a.m. as the Canadian women, ages 22 and 25, were walking not far from the Hotel Edison, where they were staying.

After crossing Broadway and 47th Street into a square, Alexis approached the women and stabbed each one in the back before fleeing, Kelly said.

Two security officers from the nearby W Hotel tended to the women and called police. Two of the W Hotel's doormen followed the suspect to a McDonald's and waited for police, who nabbed him as he was leaving the restaurant, according to police and hotel spokesman Jane Lehman.

Thirty minutes prior to that attack, police said Alexis entered the market and tried to take two beers. The store employee confronted Alexis, who whipped out a knife and ran away.

ut 3 a.m. and an hour before the Canadians were stabbed, a 30-year-old man waiting with a friend on a midtown subway platform in Rockefeller Center was stabbed twice in the stomach and chest. Police said Alexis demanded a cell phone in what was an apparent robbery.

At about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Kelly said Christopher McCarthy, 21, of Houston, was knifed by Alexis in a subway car on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

McCarthy and his girlfriend had gotten lost after heading in the wrong direction on the subway, and switched trains to travel back downtown when he was assaulted.

Kelly said detectives had also linked a palm print to Alexis that was found on the subway train in which McCarthy was riding.

McCarthy was in critical but stable condition after barely surviving the attack.

"I would say he's extremely lucky" to be alive, said Dr. Raymond Wedderburn, who performed surgery on McCarthy.

The victim was stabbed in his breastbone, near the heart, and doctors inserted a tube to
drain blood from his chest. McCarthy's father, Joe, came to Manhattan from Houston and said his son had forgiven his assailant.

"He hopes that (the attacker) can get help," said Joe McCarthy, who was accompanied by his wife. (our race is so forgiving it makes me puke!! If a nigger stabbed your son and tried to kill him, is forgiving him YOUR first reaction??? )With millions of people riding the subway everyday, the incident drew troubling comparisons to the 1990 death of 22-year-old Brian Watkins, the Utah tourist stabbed to death in a Manhattan subway station while defending his mother during a robbery.

Kelly said the subway system had never been safer, and police handed out statistics documenting that violent crime had fallen substantially.

James Hall, assistant chief, said such attacks are not common. "This really was an aberration," he emphasized to reporters. (SHUT UP!!!)
Tourists said New York feels safe.

"There are a lot of poli
ce around. I don't think these stabbings are just random acts," Scott McCoig, 24, of Detroit, said Wednesday.

McCoig said he will still use the subway. "It's the best way to travel," he said.

The slew of stabbings comes on the heels of recent news that violent crime as a whole in the city continues to decline despite a national spike.

The FBI has said that while homicides rose 4.8 percent nationwide last year, they fell 5.4 percent between 2004 and 2005 in New York City.

Violent crime in New York dropped 1.9 percent, according to the FBI, in a year when such crimes rose 2.5 percent nationwide.

Kenny Alexis, stabbed four people in bloody rampage, to serve 34 years

A former mental patient was sentenced to 34 years in prison Tuesday for stabbing four people in a terrifying 13-hour rampage that ended when he was cornered in Times Square.

"This defendant is every New Yorker's worst nightmare," Assistant District Attorney Michael Sachs said before asking the judge to send Kenny Alexis away for 75 years.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon sentenced Alexis, 23, to 18 years for the most serious of the 2006 attacks, in which he stabbed Christopher McCarthy in the heart, and a total of
16 years for the others.

While Alexis alternately begged for mercy, apologized and maintained his innocence, the judge noted the seriousness of the injuries and the randomness of the attacks.

"The defendant is extremely lucky all of them survived," Solomon said of the victims.

Alexis, of Boston, stabbed a Brooklyn man on a subway platform at Rockefeller Center; McCarthy, of Texas, on a subway train, and two Canadian women in the Theater District.
