St. Louis Man Charged With Rape, Murder Of 90 Year Old California Woman

"DNA evidence has linked a St. Louis man to the rape and murder of a 90 year old woman near San Francisco, California.

32 year old Richard McNew was already in custody in St. Louis for unrelated charges. Friday morning, two detectives with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department in California flew to St. Lous to interview McNew.

McNew has a criminal past having been charged with possession of drug paraphenalia and robbery. Said Lee, "We're making efforts now to extradite him back to Contra Costa County where he'll face the homicide charge."

McNew was charged Friday with what is called homicide with special circumstances, because the victim died during the commission of rape, robbery and burglary. He remains in custody at the St. Louis Justice Center."

Arrest Made In Murder Of Elderly Lafayette Woman

LAFAYETTE -- Authorities have made an arrest as they investigate the sexual assault and murder of a 90-year-old Lafayette woman.

Jeremy King, a 35-year-old Moraga man, was arrested Thursday night in connection with the Anna Vuori case, said Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee today.

King was detained at 10 p.m. in Orinda and booked at 1 a.m., said Lee.

The 90-year-old Vuori was found dead in her home Saturday night. Authorities are still unsure of a motive, but they do know Vuori was sexually assaulted before being smothered to death.

arrest, but that there is more digging is being done.

"Many of the seasoned investigators were surprised
n by the cruelness of this incident. We do have someone in custody, but our work is far from done. We're still looking at a lot of other things right now."

King was being held without bail in the county jail in Martinez and investigators are still "trying to determine his involvement in the case," according to Lee.

The case is still under investigation and police are interviewing others in connection with it, Lee said.

Vuori never married and lived alone, but she was deeply loved by her extended family. KTVU spoke with Vuori's nephew Alan Phillips, who was at her house Friday organizing her belongings.

"The legacy of Anna is not a victim of a violent crime," Phillips said, "but a person who was passionately committed to doing good in the world."

Phillip's says his aunt was a peace activist and an active volunt

The family is planning a memorial service for Vuori. No charges have been filed

(AP) LAFAYETTE A Missouri man being held on suspicion of the sexual assault and murder of an elderly Lafayette woman is fighting extradition back to California.

Richard Craig McNew is being held in a jail outside of St. Louis in connection with the attack last month on 90-year-old Anna Elizabeth Vuori.

Investigators identified the 30-year-old McNew as a suspect after DNA evidence collected from the scene found a match in a national database.

Richard Craig McNew, 34, a felon from St. Louis, is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering Anna Elizabeth Vuori.

Vuori was bound and gagged in her Moraga Boulevard home, sexually assaulted and found smothered to death on Dec. 10, 2005. McNew, who worked for Overachievers, a Missouri magazine-subscription company, then took $18,000 in savings bonds and $200 in cash and Vuori's keys.

At a hearing Tuesday in Martinez, McNew pleaded guilty before Judge Terence Bruiniers to murder and special circumstances that the murder was committed during the course of a robbery, burglary and rape by instrument. He also pleaded guilty to robbery and burglary counts.

In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to drop a rape charge. McNew had been scheduled to go to trial in January in Contra Costa County Superior Court and had been facing the death penalty.

"It was the best possible result, under the circumstances," said McNew's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Terri Mockler. "Had we gone to trial, there was always the possibility that a jury would have returned a death verdict."

Judge Theresa Canepa is scheduled to sentence McNew on Feb. 13.

Investigators said DNA at the crime scene matched a sample of McNew's DNA included in a national database. McNew has a criminal record in Missouri that dates to 1993 and includes convictions for assault, robbery and drug and weapons possession, court records show.
