Police say several people are hospitalized after shootings erupted during the crowded Indiana Black Expo in Indianapolis.

Sgt. Paul Thompson says as many as nine people were shot and taken to two local hospitals late Saturday. He says none of victims appear to be critically injured.

Three separate shootings left 10 people wounded and scattered hundreds in downtown Indianapolis during the crowded Indiana Black Expo, police said early Sunday.

Police spokesman Lt. Jeff Duhamell said authorities made no immediate arrests directly tied to the shootings and investigators were seeking leads to the suspects.

None of the victims' injuries were life-threatening, Duhamell told The Associated Press, adding police had made three unrelated arrests on weapons charges.

The shooting began when several shots rang out around 9:30 p.m. Saturday near Circle Centre mall, leaving eight people wounded and sending people running, Duhamell said.

He said a second shooting occurred nearby just minutes after the initial shooting and left one young man wounded. He added that the third shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. and left another man wounded.

Duhamell said the shooting victims were all males between 10 and 18 years old. He said most were taken to two area hospitals where they were in good condition early Sunday. One person was treated at the scene.

Authorities say none of the shootings occurred at venues playing host to Black Expo activities, but police patrolling amid the crowd moving about the downtown area quickly converged on the scene.

"It's pretty unusual to have this many shots in one time. It's very unfortunate," Duhamell said.

Duhamell said investigators had no immediate report on a possible motive but were trying to determine if any of the shootings were gang-related.

He said hundreds of officers had been assigned to policing the 10-day event, which concludes later Sunday.

Nobody should have been surprised at what happened this past weekend. Indianapolis residents have become all too familiar of the news that comes out during the second weekend of Black Expo. This year’s shootings make five separate shootings that have occurred at Black Expo since 2006. Downtown business owners dread the coming of this event every year. What could otherwise be a profitable summer weekend with lots of out-of-town visitors becomes one of the summer’s worst weekends.

Out-of-town visitors and local regulars avoid downtown like the plague during the second weekend of Black Expo. Bar and restaurant owners complain that their employees don’t want to work this weekend and fear for their personal safety. It got to the point a few years ago where a number of restaurants actually closed down. Business owners now say they have been ordered by the City to stay open during Black Expo or risk action being taken against them by the City, such as yanking their alcohol permits. Notwithstanding the ICVA’s incredulous claims that IBE pumps $23 million into the downtown economy, I challenge you to find any business owners downtown who will back up that claim.

The teen accused of shooting nine of 10 people in downtown Indianapolis following an Indiana Black Expo event on July 17 is facing 14 criminal charges.

Shamus Patton, 17, was in Court 22 Monday morning where prosecutor Carl Brizzi read the 12 felony charges and two misdemeanors against him.

Court documents released Monday detail witness statements regarding the shooting and include new details on Patton's gang involvement as well as the gangs involved in the shooting.

Patton now faces more than 100 years in prison. In a probable cause affidavit, he is accused of 14 crimes that include criminal gang activity.

When the family of Shamus Patton showed up to see the 17-year-old's first appearance in adult court, the prosecutor showed up to personally throw the book at him and Patton's attorney asked the judge for a gag order.

"It's now time to bring this issue back to the courtroom," said attorney Eugene Hollander.

But the judge set a hearing for next month on that request.

Patton heads to the Marion County Jail to be held on $250,000 bond. Court documents say that 15 shell casings recovered from the site of two Black Expo shootings match cartridges found in Patton's possession.

A "not guilty" plea was entered on his behalf and after the hearing it was his mother who wanted to talk, first sending a message to the families of the nine teenagers wounded in the shootings.

"I apologize to the family," said Barbara Turentine, "and, you know, I'm sorry…but."

"What are you apologizing for?" asked 24 Hour News 8's Jim Shella.

"I understand how they must feel," she said. "their child being shot and what they're going through because I know how I felt when my son was shot and what I'm going through."

If Patton was retaliating for a prior shooting, it's evidence, Prosecutor Carl Brizzi says, of criminal gang activity. He says Patton belonged to a gang known at the Ratchet Boyz and was shooting at members of a gang known as the Grimmie Boyz.

"The defendant," said Brizzi, "as alleged in the probable cause affidavit is a know gang member and this incident at Expo was fueled by a feud between these two gangs, the Ratchet Boyz and the Grimmie Boyz, we think that's important information to get out."

In the probable cause affidavit, police say that Patton also belonged to a second gang, the Savage Boyz, and that both the Savage Boyz and the Ratchet Boyz are, "extremely violent and have been involved in violent crimes."

A conviction on the charge of criminal gang activity would add 20 years to a sentence for Shamus Patton.

A trial has been set for October.
