Springfield police seek public's help in finding Edilzar Mazariegos, suspect in rape of a child

SPRINGFIELD – Police are appealing to the public for help in locating a 22-year-old Guatemalan farm worker suspected of raping a 4-year-old girl in Springfield on Saturday.

Sgt. John M. Delaney, aide to Police Commissioner William J. Fitchet, said police are looking to arrest Edilzar Mazariegos on a charge of aggravated rape of a child with force.

Mazariegos, who is also know as Edy Gonzales, is described as 5 feet, 3 inches tall with a stocky build. He was last see driving a blue Dodge Durango with two white racing stripes on the hood and roof. The vehicle has a South Carolina license plate of FSX-544. It also has a dented passenger door and a front novelty plate depicting an eagle.

Mazariegos is from Guatemala and has been employed as a farm worker in Connecticut. He has ties in Springfield, Greenfield and as far south as West Palm Beach, Fla., Delaney said.

Delaney said Mazariegos is an acquaintance of the girl’s mother.

The girl, whose name was not released, was in serious condition Monday at Baystate Medical Center. Delaney said she suffered “severe trauma” in the assault.

The girl’s mother returned home at 5 p.m. Saturday after working all day at a blueberry farm in Connecticut and found the daughter crying and bleeding, Delaney said.

She immediately brought her daughter to Mercy Medical Center. The girl was later transferred to Baystate due to the nature of her injuries, Delaney said.

A second spic, Angel Santizo, 20, of 693 Carew St., was arrested and charged originally with rape. The investigation by Lt. Cheryl Clapprood and Sgt. Albert Witkowsky of the police Special Victims Unit determined that he did not rape her but was present when the assault occured.

The charge has since been amended to a single count of permitting serious bodily injury on a child while being a caretaker.

“He was the caretaker of this child while somebody else there raped her,” Delaney said of Santizo. “We are looking for the guy that did it.”

Santizo, represented by defense lawyer Kevin M. Riddell, pleaded innocent Tuesday afternoon in District Court and Judge William J. Boyle set bail at $25,000 cash or $250,000 surety.

The U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs has put a detention order on Santizo, who is from Guatemala, police said.

Delaney said Mazariegos has no criminal record anywhere in the United States.

Springfield Police Lieutenant Cheryl Clapprood told 22News that State Troopers found him on Saturday while he was hiding in an asparagus field.

The [four year old] girl had to be taken to the hospital after the attack which happened on July 3rd.
