LOUISA, VA (WWBT) – A Louisa County man is behind bars, charged with breaking into an elderly woman's home and beating her up. 19-year-old Remone Houchens was arrested last night in connection to the attack on 87-year-old Lois Rossen.

Officials at the Louisa Sheriff's Office are thrilled to already have a suspect in custody. They say this attack is one of the most brutal crimes they've ever seen in this county--and they want criminals to know they will not tolerate this type of violence.

Lois Rossen's son Monte says she was robbed of her happy go-lucky spirit when she was attacked in her home and beaten so badly she lost sight in her left eye.

"A lot of her innocence was stolen from this event, and it's going to take a while for mom to get back on her feet and get on with her life," said Monte Rossen.

The Rossen family says the arrest of Remone Houchens will help. Hard work and DNA evidence led to his capture. A search warrant shows that police were looking for and found glass fragments containing blood evidence that had been tracked from the Rossen home to Remone Houchens' apartment on McDonald Street, just a few blocks away.

The Sheriff's Office also took several articles of clothing and guns for evidence while arresting Houchens, but even with a suspect is in custody--questions remain--including motive.

We also know that there was an attempted break-in at the Rossen home about a week prior to the beating, but sheriff's officials won't say if it's related. They also won't say much about the rumors this crime had something to do with a gang initiation.

"We are not in a position to really talk about that publicly right now, and I know that when we first heard about that, the sense of outrage went right through the community including us, and I'll say this again, it was a punk way of doing business, and I'm glad that we were able to start some closure before the end of the week," said Major Don Lowe with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office.

Born and raised in Louisa, Lois Rossen says she'll continue to call this county home. Remone Houchens is being held without bond at Central Virginia Regional Jail. He's due back in court Tuesday morning.

Also arrested in connection with the case are Rontray L. Houchens and Linda D. Houchens. Rontray Houchens was charged with three counts of drug distribution and one count of obstruction of justice. Linda Houchens was charged with obstruction of justice.

Man accused in beating expected in court

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - All eyes will be on a Louisa courtroom Monday as the man accused in the brutal beating of an 87-year-old woman is expected in court.

It's a high profile case - so high profile in fact, the defense attorney wants to move the case out of Louisa County.

Meanwhile, the man accused, Remone Houchens, is expected to enter a plea.

With his wrists and ankles handcuffed, Houchens speaks out about the high profile beating he's accused in.

"I just want everybody to know I didn't beat that woman like Louisa said I did. I told her I wasn't there to hurt her and I wasn't going to hurt her," said Houchens.

But that's not what Louisa investigators say.

Now, Houchens is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, robbery and burglary.

The first two charges carry life sentences. The third carries a sentence for 20 years.

It all stems from the May attack on Lois Rossen.

"Aggravated malicious wounding is much more serious," said Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Rusty McGuire. "It requires the commonwealth to prove that the victim received significant or permanent injury."

Rossen lost sight in her left eye in the attack, while laying in her own bed.

Rossen's son tells us his mom has had good and bad days since then - but can now walk with a cane.

Remone Houchens has given conflicting stories of the events, the Times Dispatch reports, citing police and court records a sources.

Remone Jilantai Houchens, who appeared in court for a hearing yesterday, told investigators May 28 that he was running from people who apparently were in the Crips street gang, and that he "fell through" the victim's front door, according to a transcript of the police interview.

Authorities have said Houchens is involved with the Bloods, an opposing gang.

He said his adrenaline was rushing and that Rosson panicked. "I kept saying -- I was like, 'Look. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm just trying to' -- but she won't -- it was like she wasn't hearing me," Houchens said.

He said she probably got hurt by falling down.

On June 1, talking to Louisa sheriff's Lt. Howard Porter, Houchens gave a different account. Houchens said he and a friend had broken into her house, expecting her to be asleep and steal things. He said his friend had "pushed her over." Houchens said they decided to burglarize her house because one of her relatives had talked about the things she had in her house.

Houchens told Porter that after his friend had pushed her over, he had helper her and told her he wasn't there to hurt her.

Prosecutors stated in court records that with "supplemental" evidence they will show that Houchens' claim of a separate burglar were false.
