SMU negro footballer accused of rape released on bail

A former Southern Methodist University football player held on charges of raping a woman in Huntsville was released from jail Wednesday after posting $50,000 bail.

Torlan Pittman, 20, was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated sexual assault after a woman said she was raped by him and Sean Curtis Weatherford in September.

Pittman was awaiting transfer from the Lew Sterrett Justice Center to the Walker County jail before posting bail.

Weatherford, 20, a former baseball player at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, was arrested Monday in College Station.

Pittman was a backup defensive lineman who appeared in 13 games for SMU last season. He was suspended indefinitely after coach June Jones learned of his arrest.
