Suspect Arrested in Murder of 84-year old Anaheim Woman

ANAHEIM -- A 25-year-old groid has been arrested on suspicion of murdering an 84-year-old woman and stealing her car, Anaheim police say.

Anthony Wade of Los Angeles was detained Sunday in Highland in San Bernardino County, and then taken to Anaheim, where he was booked on suspicion of murder at the Anaheim Detention Facility, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez..

He had caused a disturbance at a supermarket, Martinez said.

"When he was detained, he was in possession of a vehicle that was registered to a house in the 2400 block of Paradise Road," Martinez said.

San Bernardino Sheriff's deputies reportedly called the Anaheim Police Department, and advised them to go to the car owner's home to investigate.

When officers entered the home around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, they discovered the 84-year-old woman's body, according to Martinez.

Her name hasn't been released, however, neighbors told the Orange County Register she was Betsy Whiman. [See: Betsy Mae Whyman]

"She was a humble, lovable human being," neighbor Maria Rudal told the Register. "She loved everyone, was friendly to everybody. We called her `everybody's grandmother' because she loved all the kids in the neighborhood."

Authorities would not release information about evidence at the scene that led police to believe the woman is the victim of murder.

Wade was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Anaheim Detention Facility, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Arraignment set for POS who killed elderly Anaheim woman

ANAHEIM - A Los Angeles man who allegedly raped, tortured and killed an 84-year-old Anaheim woman in her home is expected to be arraigned today.

Anthony Darnell Wade, 25, was charged Monday with murder and elder abuse, along with special circumstances of murder during the commission of rape, torture, robbery and burglary -- charges that could lead to the death penalty, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Wade, who is being held without bail, was scheduled to appear at the Central Jail courtroom today to enter a plea.

According to police and prosecutors, Wade prowled through an Anaheim neighborhood on Paradise Road just after midnight Sunday in search of a frail victim from whom he could easily steal a car. He allegedly broke into Bessie Whyman's home through a broken window after seeing her asleep in her bedroom.

The nigger raped Whyman, tied her up and punched and kicked her. He then repeatedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife, according to prosecutors.

Wade took a blanket, covered the victim and left her body in the living room, prosecutors allege. He then allegedly took her purse and car and drove it to San Bernardino.

Wade allegedly tried to use her credit card at a Food 4 Less grocery store, but when he got into a fight with an employee who rejected the card, a store worker pepper-sprayed him and called police, officials said.

After San Bernardino police determined Whyman lived in Anaheim, they asked local police to check on her.

Officers went to the house Sunday morning but got no answer at the front door, then went around to the back, found a door open and discovered the woman dead in the living room, police said.

Anaheim detectives retrieved the vehicle from San Bernardino for processing.
