Exclamation Negro Is The Prime Suspook In The Rapes/Murders Of 3 Elderly White Women

Mystery ruled murder: Gaston man accused of killing and raping 79-year-old woman, police looking at two similar deaths
December 28, 2009 9:05 PM

Donald Eugene Borders of Cherryville faces a first-degree murder, first-degree rape charge in the 2003 death of a 79-year-old woman.

Police say Margaret Tessner's 2003 death was a homicide.

Lottie Ledford's 2003 death remains a mystery.

Lillian Mullinax's 2003 death remains a mystery.

Quote:
SHELBY – Three elderly women found dead in their beds. Three homes left unlocked and three phone lines cut or ripped apart.

For six years, residents of Shelby questioned what really happened to Margaret Tessneer, Lottie Ledford and Lillian Mullinax in the summer and fall of 2003. Despite the eerie similarities, police couldn’t find evidence they needed to link the cases or even rule the deaths as homicides.

On Monday, police arrested a Gaston County man for murder and rape in one of those cases.

Witness turns to suspect

Donald Eugene Borders, who was then living at a homeless shelter in Charlotte, was questioned by Shelby Police in 2004 regarding the deaths. He was named as a possible witness. Former Shelby Police Chief Tandy Carter made it clear Borders was not a suspect and that he provided police with information they were looking for.

Borders, 50, was arrested at his Doc Wehunt Road home in Cherryville just after 10:30 a.m. Monday, charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape and felony breaking and entering in the death of 79-year-old Margaret Tessneer.

Tessneer was found inside her Railroad Avenue home on Sept. 20, 2003. She had 25 bruises covering her body.

Attempts to reach Tessneer’s family for comment Monday were unsuccessful.

“We’re still conducting the investigation,” Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford said Monday. “We spoke to the family. They seem to be doing well. We were very excited to get to tell them what happened.”

Police are tightlipped about the investigation itself, saying only they began looking at Borders more in-depth over the past few weeks. The State Bureau of Investigation assisted in the arrest.

Borders is scheduled to make his first court appearance 9 a.m. Tuesday in Cleveland County District Court. He is currently being held in Cleveland County Jail without bond.

“I think everybody is obviously relieved that we were able to bring some type of closure to this,” Ledford said. “It’s a tribute to the investigators that keep digging.”

Ledford said it’s easy for loved ones to think the case has been forgotten since it’s been out of the spotlight so long.

“When you have a case that becomes this old and has no leads … when you don’t read about it a lot, when you don’t see it a lot … they tend to think it’s forgotten about,” he said.

Revisiting cases

Police making a murder arrest in Tessneer’s death opens the door for police to revisit the deaths of Ledford and Mullinax.

“Absolutely,” Ledford said. “We’re definitely going to look at anything that is similar.”

And there are similarities.

For one, the phone lines. At each of the three homes – which were no more than two miles apart – the phone lines were destroyed.

Two were cut and a third ripped apart.

Second, the front door of each home was left unlocked, something relatives and neighbors said was unusual.

Nothing was taken from the homes and police said there were no signs of struggle.

Lottie Mae Ledford

A relative had not been able to reach Lottie Mae Ledford on the phone for eight hours on Aug. 23, 2003, the day her body was found. An autopsy performed at Gaston Memorial Hospital concluded she died of a heart attack. The report said she had bruises on her arms and face but it could not be determined where they came from.

Lillian Mullinax

A neighbor told police it had been days since he last saw Mullinax feeding her cats.

Newspapers piled up outside her Chestnut Street home.

It had been six days since Nov. 4, 2003, that anyone could say for sure that they had seen or heard her. A neighbor said she wasn’t the kind of person to let strangers into her home.

An autopsy could not determine a cause of death.

Conviction record of murder suspect

Donald Eugene Borders’ conviction history consists of multiple larcenies and felony and misdemeanor breaking and enterings in Lincoln County and a common law robbery conviction in Cleveland County.

The offenses range from June 1997 to August 2000. He was imprisoned from April 2001 to January 2003 for his crimes.

He has been incarcerated six times in Gaston County Jail between March 2001 and May 16, 2009. Charges range from common law robbery to child support to unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Gaston County.

He has at least three assault on a female charges in Gaston County, one in 2001, another in 2005 and the third on May 16, when he spent two days in jail before being released on an unsecured bond.

Timeline

Jan. 23, 2003: Donald Eugene Borders was released from prison after being convicted in June 2000 of breaking and entering and larceny charges in Cleveland and Lincoln counties.

Aug. 23, 2003: The body of Lottie Ledford, 85, was found in her East Elm Street home. An autopsy, performed after she was embalmed, determined she died of a heart attack. The report stated Mrs. Ledford also had bruises on her arms and face, but the cause of those bruises has not been determined.

Sept. 20, 2003: The body of Margaret Tessneer, 79, was found in her Railroad Avenue home. An autopsy was unable to determine her cause of death. According to reports, her body was marked with 25 bruises. She also had a vaginal tear and blood in her underwear.

Nov. 10, 2003: The body of Lillian Mullinax, 87, was found at her Chestnut Street home. The autopsy performed on her could not determine the cause of death. The medical examiner in Chapel Hill stated in his report, “The manner in this case would be classified as a natural (death) except for the cut phone lines found at the scene.”

In all three cases, the women’s homes were left unlocked – something friends and family said was unusual for them – and their phone lines were either cut or ripped apart. No items were reported stolen from the homes and there were no signs of struggle.

March 17, 2004: Police named Borders as a possible witness in the women’s deaths and asked for the public’s help in finding him.

March 20, 2004: Borders contacted police from a homeless shelter in Charlotte after seeing a news report that they wanted to speak with him. Then-Shelby Police Chief Tandy Carter said Borders was not a suspect in the investigation and that police obtained the information they were trying to get from him.

Aug. 21, 2004: A DNA signature was obtained from Tessneer’s underwear, indicating she had sexual contact with someone before her death.

Dec. 28, 2009: Borders is charged in the first-degree murder in Tessneer’s death.

Default Lowlife, lowdown, nasty, vile nigger beast charged in murder of elderly White woman

Police in North Carolina have charged a man with killing an elderly woman six years ago.

On Tuesday Shelby police arrested Donald Eugene Borders and accused him of killing 79-year-old Margaret Tessneer. The 50-year-old Borders, who is previously from Cherryville, is charged with murder, rape and breaking and entering.

Tessneer was found dead in her bed in 2003, her phone line ripped out and the door unlocked.

Tessneer was 1 of 3 elderly women found dead under similar circumstances in a four-month period in the city about 50 miles west of Charlotte.
