Man shot dead in Hayward over argument about dogs

HAYWARD — A man was shot to death in front of his 13-year-old daughter Tuesday night as they walked their dogs to get ice cream at a neighborhood liquor store, police said.

The man, 38-year-old Thomas Cunningham of Hayward, was shot after exchanging words with a man who got mad when one of the two dogs, described as a year-old friendly German shepherd, went up to him, police said.

"One of the dogs approached the suspect and sniffed at him, the suspect told them to get the dog away from him. They did, but words were exchanged and the suspect shoots him in front of his daughter," said Hayward police Lt. Christine Orrey.

The pair had just purchased ice cream at L&M Liquors, at the corner of B and Vermont Streets, in the area near the bottom of Kelly Hill just after 10 p.m.

Cunningham was shot at least once with a handgun and was pronounced dead at Eden Medical Center.

The gunman is described as black, in his early 20s, 5-foot-4 to 6 feet tall, with a very slight build. He was wearing a dark brown or black hooded sweatshirt with a white logo on the rim of the hood and possibly an orange design on the front, and very baggy blue jeans, police said.

Trip For Ice Cream Turns Deadly For Hayward Father

HAYWARD, Calif. -- A father on an ice cream buying trip to the corner market with his daughter and the family dogs was fatally shot by a man who became enraged when one of the pets sniffed him, authorities said Wednesday.

A Hayward police spokesman said the incident took place at about 10:06 p.m. Tuesday when authorities got a 911 call reporting a shooting.

Arriving officers discovered 38-year-old Thomas Cunningham of Hayward lying unconscious outside the store, an apparent victim of a shooting.

Investigators said that Cunningham and his 13-year-old daughter had walked their two dogs to the neighborhood liquor store to buy ice cream.

Cunningham went into the liquor store to purchase the ice cream while the daughter waited outside with the dogs.

When Cunningham returned to his daughter with the ice cream, police said, they began walking home. As they passed the suspect, one of the dogs approached the suspect and sniffed at him.

Police said the suspect asked the victim and his daughter to pull the dog away, and the girl did so. But then the suspect and victim began exchanging words and the suspect became angry.

Investigators said the unidentified suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the victim at least once. The victim’s daughter, meanwhile, run into the market screaming for help.The victim was transported to Eden Hospital via ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the suspect fled on foot southbound Vermont Street toward Hill Avenue. Witnesses described him as a black male adult in his early 20’s with a very slight build. He was wearing a dark brown or black hooded sweatshirt with a white logo on the rim of the hood and possibly an orange design on the front and very baggy blue jeans.

Hayward Police investigators believe that there are additional witnesses who saw this tragic crime and urge any potential witnesses to contact them as soon as possible. Sketch released of suspect who shot father out for ice cream

HAYWARD, CA (KGO) -- People in Hayward gathered Friday evening for a vigil to honor the victim of a senseless shooting that occurred earlier this week.

As family and a community mourn, police say they are getting a pretty good description of the killer. The man is wanted for killing Thomas Cunningham in front of his 13-year-old daughter. The Hayward father had just bought the two ice cream at a corner market.

Cunningham, 38, wasn't just any neighbor

"I don't know how else to say it other than he was just a damn good friend and a great neighbor and we all miss him," said Chuck Rogers, Cunningham's neighbor.

So when this Hayward man was fatally shot Tuesday night, while walking home after getting ice cream with his daughter, even police were stunned.

"This one has hits us all, on a personal level, from an organizational standpoint as well, but our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to his family," said Hayward Police Sgt. Steve Brown.

Neighbors say he was friendly, out-going and recently bought flowers for restaurant owner Ruby Foreman.

"Yeah he came in and purchased a product from us and also dropped me off flowers, two roses," said Foreman.

The violent act that took Cunningham's life, has spurred a local pastor to do something, starting with a candlelight vigil.

"The main thing is that we're coming together as a community to support each other in this moment and to say that this not be the end," said Pastor Willie Anderson from the New Bethel Community Church.

With Cunningham's killer still out there, the pastor wants the community to honor the 38-year-old father and stand up against the violence.

"If we don't change how we are addressing these issues, the we're going to see this continue to explode, which is what we're seeing unfortunately," said Anderson.

Hayward police released a sketch of the suspect and hope that anyone with information will call them. The suspect is a young, black male, 18 to his early 20s, 5'6 - 5'10", with a slim build wearing a dark colored hoodie with a white logo on the front.

There is a $25,000 reward offered in this case for information that leads to an arrest.
