Husband charged with attempted murder

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL -- An Apollo Beach man has been arrested and charged with the attempted murder of his wife.

Christopher Hanney, 49, is accused of setting his wife on fire in their home on Tuesday.

Investigators say a domestic dispute broke out inside the couple's home on Oxford Garden Circle. They believe Hanney doused his wife with a flammable liquid and then set her and their home on fire.

When officers arrived they found 26-year-old Audrey Mabrey suffering from severe burns. Hanney was in the back yard.

The home was gutted by the fire.

On October 20, deputies were home on a report of domestic violence, but Mabrey did not want to press charges against her husband.

She's now listed in Critical condition at Tampa General Hospital.

Hanney is being held without bond on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.

Strangers and friends help severely burned woman

APOLLO BEACH, FL -- Friends and strangers are coming together to help Audrey Mabrey, a woman who authorities say may have been set on fire by her husband.

Hillsborough deputies say 44-year-old Chris Hanney is now charged with the attempted murder of his wife. She was burned over 80% of her body.

Thursday afternoon, two of her Hillsborough Community College classmates stopped by to see the damage.

Brandi Sampson and Jessica Lovell told ABC Action News about a fundraiser for Audrey happening at the HCC Southshore campus in Ruskin.

"If you guys could donate clothes, money," Sampson said, "her kids could use the help."

Nearby in Brandon, Mabrey worked as a waitress at the Chili's restaurant at 1949 W. Brandon Blvd for three years. Inside, they're putting together a fundraiser for her.

Danielle Smith from the Dallas corporate office said the company will provide Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for Mabrey's family.

Janice Powers never even formally met Mabrey. That hasn't stopped Powers from setting up a trust fund for her and her kids through Bank of America.

"I did not even know her name. It doesn't matter. It's not important. What's important is helping another human being that needs it," said Powers.

At last check, Mabrey was still in the hospital clinging to life.

Meanwhile, according to Powers, Mabrey's parents are struggling to get enough money to get a ticket to fly from Texas to Tampa.

Mabrey's children, according to officials, are in the care of a loved one.

Chris Hanney is in jail, awaiting a bond hearing set for November 24. He is charged with First Degree Attempted Murder.

At 2:26 p.m. Tuesday, Laura April received a disturbing text message from Christopher Hanney.

She said he wrote: "I'm sorry for all I've done. Now I am the monster she made me out to be. I love you all. God bless. It's time I met my fate. Goodbye."

April's boyfriend, who also received the text message, called Hanney but only got voice mail. She texted him. Both got no reply.

She called Hanney's wife, Audrey Mabrey, and got no answer.

Then she turned on the local news and her worst fears were realized.

Sheriff's officials say Hanney doused his wife with an accelerant and set her on fire at their Apollo Beach home. Mabrey suffered burns on 80 percent of her body. He suffered injuries from the fire or self-inflicted wounds. Both were flown to Tampa General Hospital.

On Wednesday, Hanney was charged with attempted first degree murder and transferred to Orient Road Jail, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Web site. Mabrey remains in critical condition at the hospital.

April said she and Mabrey met four years ago while working at a Brandon Chili's. They quickly became close, in part because their children are close in age.

April said Mabrey is a warm and strong person who made her feel comfortable. She said Hanney was likable and he even took care of her children.

"You would never know it that he could do something like that," said April, 27, of Valrico. "I don't know what set him off, what threw him over the deep end."

Victim speaks out after husband allegedly set her on fire

CLEARWATER, FL -- Audrey Mabrey is a 26-year-old mother of two little boys whose life has changed forever.

It happened on November 17, 2009. Mabrey says it was that day her husband, Christopher Hanney, lost control.

"I would describe it that he just snapped. I swallowed some gasoline, I was on fire. It is one of the worst injuries to go through. My doctors say it will be at least a year before I can even function on my own."

Hillsborough County Deputies have charged Hanney with first degree attempted murder and arson. Investigators said Mabrey was hit in the head with a hammer and doused with lighter fuel. She spent weeks in critical care at Tampa General Hospital's burn unit.

Mabrey says, "My injuries are so bad people stare. But, I am at the point I really don't care anymore."

There are plenty of people who care about her. Even those that don't even know her.

Julie Weintraub, who owns Gold and Diamond Source with her husband Steve in Clearwater, has taken up Mabrey's cause.

Weintraub just launched her non-profit Hands Across the Bay. Her first event will benefit Mabrey.

"I just could not believe when I heard what happened to her. I just had to help. Years earlier, when my husband and I did not really have the cash, we donated jewelry. Now, I am able to do more and I want to help make a difference in her life."

ABC Action News was there when Weintraub spoke to the woman she is trying to help for the first time. She broke down in tears as she told Mabrey, "We are all going to be there and we are going to have an awesome time."

At the Courtside Grille this Thursday, Weintraub's charity is hosting a celebrity bartending fundraiser.

In attendance will be reality TV star Mary Murphy, one of the judges on Fox's reality dance competition "So You Think You Can Dance". Recently Murphy revealed she was a victim of domestic violence. Mabrey had reached out to her and Weintraub wanted to make sure Murphy could attend.

"It is great that she wants to be here. It will help raise money for this young woman who really needs it. I am hoping for a huge turnout."

ABC Action New anchor Brendan McLaughlin will also be there supporting the cause.

Mabrey says, "I just can't believe how much people care. I want to get back on my feet so I can take care of my little boys."
