WHEATON, Md. -- A woman killed to cover up a check fraud scam may have been burned alive, according to court documents.

Three suspects in the crime -- 37-year-old Jose Alvarado; his wife, 33-year-old Ana Rodas; and his cousin, 32-year-old Ramon Alvarado -- appeared in court Monday.

Lila Meizell, 83, was found dead in her smoke-filled home in the 10500 block of Inwood Avenue by police officers called to make a welfare check Wednesday night. Meizell's boyfriend called police when his phone call to Meizell was cut off.

After calling for help, the officers found Meizell unresponsive on the floor inside the home. They were able to pull her outside, but she could not be resuscitated.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide due to blunt force trauma, burns and smoke inhalation, police said.

The fire was ruled arson and was set with an ignitable liquid near where Meizell's body was found inside the residence, according to police and fire marshals.

The suspects went to Meizell's home Wednesday night, and after Jose Alvarado got a check for work he'd done, Ramon Alvarado forced his way inside, grabbed Meizell by the throat and slammed her into several pieces of furniture before pouring the gas and setting the fire, according to court documents. When she was pulled from the home, Meizell appeared to have been burned alive, officers said.

Investigators learned that Jose Alvarado had done yard work at Meizell's home and had changed a check from Meizell for $75 to $7,500 and cashed it. The plan to kill Meizell and cover up the slaying with the fire apparently was hatched to cover up the check fraud before Meizell could find out, according to court documents.

Jose Alvarado was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and first-degree arson. Rodas was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit arson. Ramon Alvarado was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

The three agreed to split the $7,500 gained in the check fraud, according to court documents, with Ramon Alvarado getting $1,200 and Rodas getting $1,000.

All three were ordered held without bond and will appear in court again later this month.

Illegal invader sentenced for burning woman to death

On Monday, Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence J. McGann told convicted murderer Ramon Alvarado: "The inhumane manner you chose to exterminate a lady well into the autumn years of her life strongly suggests that you are sadistic. A civilized society demands that you be in prison for the remainder of your life."

Judge McGann sentenced the illegal alien to life in prison without the possibility of parole, for the 2008 murder of 83-year-old Lila Miezell.

Last November, Ramon Alvarado, along with his cousin Jose Alvarado went to Meizell’s home, beat her, breaking seven of her ribs, and doused her with gasoline, then set the house on fire. The elderly woman was still alive when the Mexican nationals set her ablaze.

A firefighter as well as two police officers were injured in the futile attempt to rescue Miezell from the burning house.

The coroner’s report confirmed that Miezell died from the flames and smoke. She was actually burned to death.

The two cousins did this to prevent her from reporting them to police, after they added two zeros to a check she gave them for yard work. Miezell gave them a check for $75, they then deposited the check which appeared to be written for $7,500, using the money to buy a car, a computer, and clothes.

According to prosecutors, Jose Alvarado paid his cousin $1,000 to help him kill Miezell.

Last month, Ramon Alvarado was convicted in a jury trial of murder and arson, while Jose Alvarado has pleaded guilty to the murder and now awaits sentencing.

Prosecutors showed Judge McGann photos of the murder scene, and Miezell’s charred body. Her face was unrecognizable.

McGann told Alvarado: "One cannot look at them very long without gagging. I'm going to put these in the envelope so they don't turn anyone else's stomach."

Before Alvarado was sentenced, a statement written by Miezell’s daughter was read to the court. She stated: "My mother was a very trusting woman. When it came to hiring people for her lawn, she was happy with this man."

A recent string of violent crimes committed by illegal aliens in Montgomery County, MD, has brought a great deal of criticism to the county, as well as the state of Maryland for the way they deal with criminal aliens.

As a direct result of Maryland’s continued lax attitude toward illegal immigration, the state’s sanctuary cities, and lack of cooperation with federal authorities, violent crimes committed by illegal aliens have recently soared.

Maryland is also one of a handful of states which issues driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. Additionally, the Maryland State Board of Education recently announced that they will not allow county school districts to count the number of illegal alien students registered in their respective districts.

Several high profile murders committed by illegal aliens in Montgomery County, MD forced city officials to change their policy in reporting criminal aliens to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. However, as Judicial Watch recently pointed-out, Montgomery County police only report illegal aliens to the feds when they have been arrested for a very serious crime such as rape or murder.

Illegal aliens arrested for burglary, simple assault, and most weapons violations are still not reported to ICE for deportation. Just as with any offender, bail is set for them and they are released back onto the streets to either commit more crimes in the county or to flee elsewhere.

An illegal alien has been sentenced to life in prison for breaking into an 83-year-old woman's home, grabbing her by the throat, smashing her head into furniture, saturating her with gasoline and setting her body on fire while she was still alive – all to cover up his check-fraud scam after she hired him to cut her lawn.

Ramon Alvarado, 33, and his cousin, Jose Alvarado, 37, were hired to do yard work for Lila Meizel at her home in Wheaton, Md. They worked for the woman for two years, and Meizel often gave the men soda, food and extra tips.

Jose's wife, Ana Rodas, 33, was also arrested in connection with the murder that took place the day before Thanksgiving last year. Ramon was convicted of murder, arson and conspiracy in October. On Monday, he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms – one without parole – plus an additional 30 years for arson.

A Montgomery County jail official confirmed that all three were illegal aliens. According to reports, they are from El Salvador and have lived in the United States for more than 10 years. The Gaithersburg Gazette reported Immigration and Customs Enforcement had detainers on all three defendants, flagging them for possible federal charges and deportation proceedings.

According to prosecutors, Meizel gave the men a $75 check for landscaping work. Jose added two zeros to the number, agreeing to give his cousin $1,200 and Rodas $1,000. They used the $7,500 to buy a car, computer and clothes. Ramon and Jose pre-emptively conspired to kill Meizel when the two believed they might be caught.

Firefighters found Meizel in her burning home and pulled her outside, but they were unable to resuscitate her. A firefighter and two police officers sustained injuries in the blaze.

Both Ramon and Jose Alvarado had previous criminal records in Montgomery County. Jose had a history of check fraud, according to the Washington Examiner. Ramon had a warrant out for his arrest for driving a car without a license or registration. Rodas had no criminal history.

Montgomery's top prosecutor called the murder case the most horrific he has seen since taking office, according to the Washington Post.

An autopsy revealed Ramon caused Meizel to suffer a brain hemorrhage and fractured seven of her ribs. She had soot in her lungs and burned tissue in the back of her throat, indicators that she was alive when he set her on fire. Most of her body was charred and her face was unrecognizable.

"The inhumane manner you chose to exterminate a lady well into the autumn years of her life strongly suggests that you are sadistic," Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence J. McGann told Ramon Alvarado. "A civilized society demands that you be in prison for the remainder of your life."

During Ramon's trial, Judge McGann said he could not look at the autopsy photos "very long without gagging."

"I'm going to put these in the envelope so they don't turn anyone else's stomach," he said.

According to the report, Ramon Alvarado spoke only about his concern for his mother.

"I am thinking about what my mother is going to think of me after I get sentenced," he said through an interpreter. "I'm concerned about my mother. When she finds out what happens to me, she can get quite ill."

Jose Alvarado pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on June 3 and faces up to life in prison. Rodas pleaded guilty June 3 to accessory after the fact and faces up to five years in prison.

"I lost my head," Jose Alvarado told the Washington Post, speaking from a pay phone last year inside the Montgomery County jail. "I don't know what to say. It just happened suddenly. I was tempted by demons."

Meizel's daughter described her mother as "a very trusting woman," saying she was satisfied with Ramon's services.

"When it came to hiring people for her lawn, she was happy with this man," she said.

"May God forgive me for what I did," Ramon Alvarado reportedly told police shortly after the murder.

Just after Meizel's murder last year, WND reported another case where an illegal alien fatally beat a 64-year-old woman who gave him a home. In December, Julio Cesar Ramos – who had been deported more than a dozen times – was charged with first-degree murder after allegedly beating Paulette Locklear to death when she took him in, built a small house on her property for him, gave him work and treated him like family.

She called 9-1-1 just before being beaten to death with a blunt object outside of her home.

Md. Man Gets Life for Arranging 83-Year-Old's Murder

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - A 38-year-old landscaper has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for arranging the murder of an 83-year-old Wheaton woman.

Jose Alvarado pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in June. Montgomery County Circuit Judge Paul H. Weinstein handed down the sentence on Tuesday.

Alvarado admitted going to the home of Lila Meizell with his cousin, Ramon Alvarado, in November 2008. Jose Alvarado had added two zeros to a $75 check from Meizell and was afraid Meizell would discover the theft. As the cousins had agreed, Ramon Alvarado forced his way into Meizell's house, beat her and set her on fire while she was still alive.

Ramon Alvarado was sentenced in November to two consecutive life terms plus 30 years in prison.

Md. Woman Gets 5 Years in Murder of 83-Year-Old

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - A 33-year-old woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for her role in the murder of an 83-year-old woman, who was beaten and set on fire.

Ana Rodas' husband and his cousin have been sentenced to life in prison for the murder. Rodas pleaded guilty to trying to conceal the crime afterward.

On Tuesday, Montgomery County Circuit Judge Paul Weinstein said he believed Rodas could have been convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Rodas told detectives that she came up with the idea before the murder to burn Meizell's house. The defense said Rodas was uneducated and isolated, making her likely to admit to things she didn't do.

The cousins, Jose and Ramon Alvarado, conspired to kill Lila Meizell after Jose Alvarado worried that she would discover he had altered a check from her.
