PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- A maintenance worker has been arrested after a 93-year-old woman was found dead in her Pembroke Pines home Tuesday.

The body of 93-year-old Evelyn Norell was discovered by her granddaughter, who was checking in on her at her home in the Images townhome development in the 700 block of Northwest 108th Terrace.

When Norell's body was found, her throat was slit and she was unclothed from the waist down, Local 10's Jonathan Vigliotti reported.

Elton Walters, 62, was arrested and faces possible charges of first-degree murder. Walters is a maintenance worker at the development.

Police said that shortly before Norell's body was discovered, neighbors saw Walters run through the lawn, jump in his car and speed off, running over a curb and hitting a stop sign. Police tracked him down and arrested him.

"Detectives were able to locate a plastic bag inside that vehicle. Inside the plastic bag was Miss Norell's purse, identification, and all the stuff was wrapped inside of a bloody sheet," said Sgt. Carlos Bermudez of the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

Police said Walters admitted to being in the home but did not admit to killing Norell.

Investigators said it is unclear why Norell was targeted. Residents described Norell as quiet and sweet.

"It could have been any one of us, really -- I live right over here," said one neighbor.

Neighbors said they are terrified, especially because the suspect is a maintenance worker at the complex.

"We are very scared because you don't know what happened," said another resident.

Another neighbor described the suspect as being friendly and nice to everyone.

"I've never seen him go in anybody's houses. He was always doing his job. He was picking up trash and sweeping up, cleaning our fountains here, just in general riding around," said neighbor Ronald Haddaway.

Crime scene detectives spent much of Wednesday scouring the townhouse for clues.

A 93-year-old retired British nurse had her throat slashed in a brutal murder at her Florida home.

Wheelchair-bound Evelyn Norell may also have been sexually assaulted during the murder, allegedly committed by an odd job man.

Police say the elderly victim was discovered naked from the waist down and lying in a pool of blood, by her granddaughter yesterday.

Maintenance man Elton Walters, 62, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Walters, of Miami, works at the Images Condos complex, in Pembroke Pines, South Florida, where Norell had reportedly lived alone for more than 10 years.

Detectives are now piecing together the motive behind the shocking killing, which has left the quiet community reeling.

Neighbours say the former registered nurse was 'charming' and loved to talk about her grandchildren.

It is understood that her daughter has now flown to Florida from her home in England. It is not clear whereabouts in Britain the victim hails from.

Pembroke Pines Police Department yesterday held a press conference to release the grim murder details.

They say a witness had spotted a maintenance worker fleeing the scene at around the time Norell was attacked. Walters was picked up by patrols shortly after.

'Mr Walters gave consent to detectives to search his vehicle,' said Sergeant Carlos Bermudez.

'Detectives found a plastic bag inside the vehicle. Inside this was Ms Norell's purse, identification and other stuff. All this was wrapped inside a bloody sheet.'

Walters, who denies the charge, is being held at Broward Main Jail. More charges could follow.

Stunned residents at the apartment complex said the accused killer had always seemed 'nice and polite'.

'He's one of our maintenance guys, and he, like everybody says, he's the friendliest guy in the world,' Ronald Haddaway told Fox News.

'He would always say good morning, or how you doing, and he would talk to you, and he just seemed like the nicest guy.

'Apparently, those are the ones you have to watch out for.'

Nadia Culbreath added: 'I'm shocked because this guy is always riding up and down in his cart.

'He says hello to me all the time.

'I remember one time he told me that I was a beautiful lady and whatever, but he just keeps going, keeping the neighborhood clean.'
