Convicted rapist connected to three unsolved crimes

A convicted rapist has been connected to three unsolved rapes in Louisville, and police believe there could be more victims.

43-year-old Lonnie Roberson is locked up at Metro Corrections. Police say he is a serial rapist, and that's why they believe there are more victims.

After serving several years in prison for three rapes, Roberson was released from prison in December of 2008. Now he's back behind bars. Det. Brian Sherrard of the Louisville Metro Police Dept. explains, "The connection was made from DNA hits when I received the cold cases this year." Those DNA hits connected Roberson to unsolved rapes from 1989, 1999, and 2001 in Metro Louisville. "Most of them are late at night," Sherrard says. "Most of them involve someone walking."

The 1989 rape happened in the 600 block of South 27th Street, and in 1999 police say Roberson attacked a woman walking near his car in the 2300 block of West Jefferson. Sherrard says, "And when she got basically parallel with the vehicle, he turned around, grabbed her, and pulled her into the car."

In 2001, police believe Roberson raped a woman in an alley near Dixie and Wilson. Det. Sherrard interviewed all three victims. He says they're all willing to cooperate, but are still struggling: "As much as they're thankful that there might be some closure, they're not very excited to see you."

Det. Sherrard then brought Roberson back in to be questioned. "When he came in and talked to me," Sherrard says, "he was very surprised." Police say Roberson doesn't remember the attacks but they are confident he's their man and believe there are more victims. Sherrard says,"I think that's highly likely that there are more people out there."
