Pregnant woman shot to death in Bradenton home invasion

Crystal Youngblood was three months away from giving birth to her first child, but didn't live to experience it.

Her best friend, Cassie Betancourt, showed ABC Action News a picture of Crystal from her digital camera. In the photo, the 19-year-old blonde was smiling - and her pregnancy was showing.

Betancourt tearfully told us Crystal had already picked out a name for her unborn
girl: Lariah Faith. "Everyday she went shopping for the baby," Betancourt said. "It was an adventure, it was exciting, you know. She smiled everyday."

Manatee County Sheriff's officials say 2 or 3 unknown black male suspects kicked in the front door of her apartment on 5th Street East around 1:20 a.m. The suspects began shooting.

Deputies say Johnson was shot as she came out of her bedroom to see what was going on. She was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital where she died.

Doctors delivered and transported little Lariah Faith to All Children's Hospital where she died a few hours later.

Johnson's mother, sister and boyfriend where in the apartment when the shooting occurred.

Deputies say Johnson's boyfriend, 22 year-old Lawrence "LT" Funsch returned fire and detectives believe that one of the suspects was shot.

Pregnant Woman, Baby Killed in Florida Home Invasion

Police are searching for the masked intruders who kicked in the door of a Bradenton apartment and fatally shot a 19-year-old pregnant woman, causing the death of her baby.

Crystal Johnson was seven months pregnant. Authorities said she was shot once in the neck by the intruders who kicked the door down early Sunday and started firing.

She died at a hospital. Her baby girl was delivered and liv
ed on a respirator for two hours.

Johnson's 21-year-old boyfriend, Lawrence Funsch, grabbed a handgun and returned fire at the intruders. Johnson's mother and sister, who also were sleeping in the apartment, were not hurt.

Detectives don't know what led to the shooting, but they say it wasn't random.

The man accused of taking part in the home invasion shooting that left Johnson and her child dead was released from the hospital Saturday and booked into the Manatee County jail on two counts of murder.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office detectives served Everrick Houston, 28, with two murder warrants at Manatee Memorial Hospital late Friday in the deaths of Johnson and her baby.

Houston had been in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound authorities believe he may have suffered in a home invasion of Moore’s DeSoto Village apartment just after 1 a.m. July 12.

Sheriff’s reports say Johnson’s boyf
riend, Lawrence Funsch, the father of the unborn baby, opened fire on three men who barged into the apartment. Detectives believe Houston to be one of the intruders, but it is still under investigation if he fired a weapon, sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said.

Bristow said evidence found at the scene “implicated Houston in the shooting,”� but he declined Saturday to say what the evidence is.

“We have a solid case, but we still have a lot to do because we are hoping more arrests are coming,”� Bristow said.

2nd arrest in pregnant mother's murder

Bradenton, Florida - Deputies have arrested a second man in the case of a pregnant woman who was murdered last Sunday morning at the Desoto Village Apartments located on 5th St. East.

Detectives say 19-year-old Crystal Johnson was shot as she walked out of her bedroom. She died at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Johnson was approximately 6-7 months pregnant and was due on October 31st. Doctors delivered the baby girl and transported her to All Children's Hospital where she later died.

Everrick Houston, 28, was char
ged with two counts of murder in the death of Crystal Johnson and her baby.

"Houston showed up at Manatee Memorial Hospital shortly after the shooting suffering from a gunshot wound," Sheriff W. Brad Steuvbe said in a statement. "He remains at Manatee Memorial and will be transported to jail upon his release from the hospital."

Detectives said Houston was apparently shot by the victim's boyfriend, Lawrence Funsch. He told them he started firing when several men broke into their apartment and started shooting.

Jeremy Stotz has also been arrested. He's been charged with possesion of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, and making false statements to law enforcement.

Investigators believe the incident was drug related. More arrests are expected.
