Two Kashmiri women were raped before being murdered: Lab report

Srinagar: A forensic report has confirmed that two women found dead in south Kashmir’s Shopian town last week had been raped before being murdered, police said yesterday. The deaths have triggered violent protests across the valley for the past week.

The police registered a case of gang rape after a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report received Saturday evening, a senior police officer said. “The report was received by us yesterday (Saturday),”� the official said.

The killing of the two women, Neelofar January, 22, and her sister-in-law Asiya January, 17, led to massive protests across Kashmir where life has been paralyzed completely for the past week.

The autopsy of the two bodies was conducted last Saturday. The samples collected by a team of doctors were sent to FSL.

The villagers and the family members of the two women allege that they were raped and murdered by the security forces.

Though the state government initially said it was a case of death by drowning, the massive public outrage forced Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to order a judicial probe.

Indefinite strike called in Kashmir

Srinagar: In a grim reminder of last summer’s agitation in Jammu and Kashmir, normal life and business were hit for the third day yesterday in the valley, as shutdown and violent protests against the alleged rape and murder of two women last week showed no let up.

The volatile situation that has engulfed the entire Kashmir Valley is feared to linger on as senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani called
for an “indefinite strike”� till Kashmir is demilitarized. He spoke to the media over phone hours before he was arrested and taken to an unknown place.

In Srinagar and other major towns of the valley, roads were deserted, shops and schools shut and strict restrictions continued as people in many areas of the summer capital took to the streets demanding action against the security forces allegedly involved in the rape and murder of Neelofar January, 22 and her kin Asiya January, 17. The women were found dead on Saturday in a field near their house in the south Kashmir Shopian town, 60km from here.

Since then relentless violent protests have rocked the valley.

Forensic report confirms Shopian women were raped

SRINAGAR: The Forensic Sciences Laboratory on Sunday confirmed that the two women who died under suspicious circumstances at Shopian had been sexually assaulted before they died.

The police have registered a First Information Report under Section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code.

Police sources told The Hindu that the report by the FSL confirmed that Neelofar (22), who was pregnant, and Asiya (17) were sexually assaulted before their death last week. “Spermatozoa detected,”� reads the report given by the experts.

The bodies had visible marks of violence as per the doctors who conducted the autopsy, the sources said; it would be further investigated whether it was a gang rape.

The FIR, the sources said, would pave the way for further investigations and help the judicial commission headed by Justice Muzaffar Jan to probe the matter.

The police had maintained that it was a case of drowning and prima facie no rape and murder had taken place. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah endorsed the view at a news conference here.

“Till Tuesday, when Neelofar and Asiya’s fourth day ceremony would be observed, we are busy with the last rites and by then the government should make public the post mortem report and identify of those who raped and murdered the duo,”� Neelofar’s father, Syed Abdul Hai, told Greater Kashmir.

“If the government fails to produce the rapists and murderers before us, we will launch a massive agitation and start an indefinite strike,”� he said. “We will commit self-immolation. It is better to die for the honour and dignity of our women than to live a life of disrespect and disgrace,”� he said. Syed said the family members were aware of the fact that their daughters were first raped and then murdered. “The team of doctors who conducted the second post mortem on them told us that the duo was gang raped and then murdered. We want to hear this officially and see the guilty being hanged,”� he said.

Fifty people were reported injured during the protest. Meanwhile, Yasin Malik, chief of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, was held in Srinagar, during a protest march, Reuters reported. ”

Man Marries Dog In Satanic Bestiality Ritual

A man in southern India married a female dog in a traditional Hindu ceremony as an attempt to atone for stoning two other dogs to death - an act he believes cursed him, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

P. Selvakumar married the sari-draped former stray named Selvi, chosen by family members and then bathed and clothed for the ceremony Sunday at a Hindu temple in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the Hindustan Times newspaper said.

Selvakumar, 33, told the paper he had been suffering since he stoned two dogs to death and hung their bodies from a tree 15 years ago.

"After that my legs and hands got paralyzed and I lost hearing in one ear," he said in the report.

The paper said an astrologer had told Selvakumar th
e wedding was the only way he could cure the maladies. It did not say whether his situation had improved.

Deeply superstitious people in rural India sometimes organize weddings to dogs and other animals, believing it can ward off certain curses.

The paper showed a picture of Selvakumar sitting next to the dog, which was wearing an orange sari and a flower garland.

The paper said the groom and his family then had a feast, while the dog got a bun.

It also found more than 50 wounds on the 15-year-old's body - including 23 cuts, abrasions and bruises over her torso, face, the back of her neck and genitalia inflicted before she died.

New Delhi: The Goa police have arrested one man in connection with the murder of 15-year old British teenager Scarlette Keeling.

The accused, a bar tender at the Anjuna beach where Scarlett's body was found last month, was among the three people detained by the police for questioning. He has been charged with rape. However, the two others have been let off after interrogation.

“It is a definite case of murder. The same person we charged for rape can be charged for murder. He was the last person seen in a compromising position with the girl and the police has got enough evidence to book this man,”� says IGP, Goa, Kishan Kumar.

He adds that as the investigations proceed, more arrests are possible.

The arrest on Sunday came a day after Scarlett's second autopsy suggested she could have been murdered. However sources at the Goa Medical College told CNN-IBN that they had asked the police to investigate the circumstances that lead to Scarlette's death earlier too. The second autopsy was done after Scarlett's mother Fiona MacKeown accused the Goa police of a cover-up. For her, this is just the beginning of a battle for justice.

Husband Charged in Cary Woman's Slaying - Harish Purushottamdas Patel

Cary — Cary police Monday night charged Harish Purushottamdas Patel, 60, with murder in the death of his estranged wife, whose burned body was found in Virginia last month.

“As sad as this case is, we are pleased to have been able to bring it to such a swift and certain conclusion,”� said Cary Police Chief Pat Bazemore. “It’s important for our citizens to know that this was not a random act of violence against someone in our community.”�

Police took Patel, of 1128 Woodway Bluff Circle, to the
Wake County Public Safety Center for processing.

Vanlata Patel, 57, was last seen Jan. 16, her son, Ashesh Patel, told WRAL. She was reported missing Jan. 18 after she failed to board a plane the previous day to Toronto.

According to Mecklenburg County, Va., authorities, firefighters found Vanlata Patel's body about 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 wrapped in a comforter at the center of a brush fire about 20 feet off an embankment along Interstate 85's mile marker 19.

On Jan. 22, medical examiners conclusively identified the charred remains as being Patel.

The Patels had been married since 1996 and had adult children from previous marriages. She filed for divorce in November.

Court records show Vanlata Patel had a dispute with her estranged husband over how their financial assets should be divided.

In her divorce complaint, Vanlata Patel requested a majority of more than $400,000 in Swiss bank accounts that she shared with Harish Patel, including $100,000 she claimed was a gif
t from her parents that she was keeping in the account for her son from a previous marriage.

Bazemore said she had talked with the victim's son and that he said he was relieved over the arrest, even if it was his stepfather that was charged.

Patel was being held without bond Monday night. His is scheduled to be in court Tuesday morning.

A 10-year-old Indian girl was beheaded by her grandfather, who believed that sowing seeds mixed with her blood would yield a bumper crop.

The killing, spurred by age-old superstitions, took place on Sunday in the tribal region of Sambalpur, 450 kilometres west of Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa state, the IANS news agency reported.

The barbaric crime was detected after the villagers caught the man, Rajesh Hembram, and handed him over to the police.

Hembram, who owned 1.2 hectares of farmland, planned to sow seeds mixed with the blood of his granddaughter on Monday on Akshaya Tritya, a day considered auspicious by Hindus, police said.

"He cut off his granddaughter Bernaka Kandulana's head with an axe in a room when nobody was at home and drained her blood into a pot," P.C. Nayak, a police inspector said.

"We found some seeds in a steel pot that were mixed with blood," he said. Police said the man was arrested and had admitted his crime.

India has a centuries-old tradition of human sacrifices to appease deities, gain prosperity or ward off evil. Some cases are still reported around the country.

In recent years, parents in Orissa sacrificed their two sons on advice of an occult practitioner that it would please the gods and bring them prosperity.

Kashmir police held in rape, murder probe

Four police officers were arrested by the special investigation team probing the alleged rape and murder of two young Muslim women in India-administered Kashmir Wednesday evening, a senior police officer confirmed.

The arrests were made on the orders of the state high court, which is hearing a "public interest litigation" filed by the Kashmir bar association, the senior officer said.

The senior officer said the arrests included the former police chief of south Kashmir's Shopian district and three of his subordinates, who are accused of "destruction of evidence" and "dereliction of duty" in connection with the deaths, which occurred in the town of Shopian.

The four officers had been suspended last month after an inquiry commission instituted by the state government indicted them, a doctor, a gynecologist and an official of the forensic science laboratory.

A division bench of the high court, including Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, Wednesday also ordered DNA profiling of the four officers to be matched with biological evidence from the two victims, Asiya Jan, 17, and her sister-in-law, Neelofar Jan, 22.

The recovery of their bodies on May 30 from a village stream has kept India-administered Kashmir on boil. Two people have died and many have been injured in more than 300 in violent clashes between Muslim protesters and Indian security forces.

The authorities had initially claimed that the two women died of drowning in the stream, but under mounting public pressure and widespread protests the government was forced to institute a commission of inquiry.

KINDERGARTEN students will be told about the importance of Sorry Day and will be required to learn about indigenous societies by the end of Year 4 under the Federal Government's draft national curriculum.

Inclusion of the "politically correct" material after lobbying by interest groups is part of a push for history in primary schools, with a major focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Copies of the English, history, maths and science curriculums show requirements at kindergarten level include "engaging with the oral traditions and art of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people".

Senior educationists believe the new curriculum for students in kindergarten to Year 10, due to come into force next year, has been infiltrated by fringe lobby groups seeking to include issues such as multiculturalism, indigenous rights, ethical behaviour and sustainable living.

Concerns within the education groups centre on dropping history in the early years of schooling, watering down of maths standards and an over-emphasis on grammar in the English curriculum.

Sorry Day – established in 2008 – is portrayed in the curriculum as a community commemoration in the same fashion as Anzac Day.

In Year 1 children will examine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander seasonal calendars and also look at social groups ranging from the "nuclear family" to "extended clans, kinship groups, villages and tribes".

In English, kindergarten kids will also be taught to "acknowledge the home languages of students who speak another language and value the ability to speak more than one language".

The science curriculum contains material about sustainability, ethics and more content relating to the "cultural perspectives" of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Education chiefs fear the draft national curriculums, due for release on Monday, could undermine quality content already taught to students.

The Board of Studies NSW will call public meetings across the state for community opinions.
