Devon Owens arrested in early morning rape case

Police arrested a Canton man after a woman told police that he entered her home and raped her early this morning.

Devon Owens, 38, of 1358 Plain Ave. NE, was arrested at 2 a.m. at a neighbor’s home on aggravated burglary and rape charges, Stark County Jail records said.

A 20-year-old Canton woman told police that he entered her home, grabbed her and raped her at a residence on Windsor Place SW about 1:15 a.m. today, Canton police reports said.

She was taken to Aultman Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries, reports said.

Owens remained in the jail this afternoon, held in lieu of $50,000 bond, jail records said.

AKRON, Ohio - Relatives of 72-year-old Clara Wilfong say she rarely if ever locked the door to her Brown Street apartment.

On Saturday when they tried unsuccessfully to reach her by phone, a granddaughter and her boyfriend found Wilfong's door shut and locked, and when they broke in were not prepared for what they found.

Sitting on a bed next to the body of the woman was a man who they say seemed to be hurrying to get dressed.

"His pants were half..it was like he was putting his clothes back on when they came through the door and he pointed to her before he jumped out and said that's my girlfriend" Clara's nephew, Norman Greer, tells Fox 8 News.

As they challenged him, relatives say the man jumped up off the bed, slammed the bedroom door shut, and jumped out of a second story window.

"From what we could tell nothing was taken the man came up there with the sole purpose of raping and murdering her" said Greer.

Wilfong was retired after working at Akron Children's Hospital for 41 years. She was on oxygen because of a chronic lung illness, and would have been unable to defend herself.

It is unclear if the intruder lives in the same neighborhood or if he was familiar with the victim and where she lived.

Her sister, Judy Greer, lives in the same apartment building and says she is now concerned for her own safety.

"It scares me...scares me to death" Judy tells Fox 8, saying that she and her boyfriend now make sure her doors are locked.

Akron Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect, described as African American, between 35 and 45 years old, tall and slender, between 125 and 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing black denim jeans with a braided belt and had no shirt on.

Witnesses told authorities the suspect may have been hit by a truck as he was running away, and so he may be injured. Police say he may also have had either a tatoo or a scar that resembles a nike 'swoosh'.

"We would like to get this guy off the street before he ends up doing this to someone elses grandmother or seven year old daughter" Norman Greer says, "because if he is this sick to go after a 72 year old he is definitely sick enough to go after a seven year old."

Judy Greer agrees, "anybody that hurts an animal a child, an elderly person that cannot defend themselves should be immediately put down." [that means ALL niggers should be put down]

Akron police have revealed a detailed description of a suspect who physically and sexually assaulted an elderly Akron woman inside her home last week.

The shirtless suspect with a prominent scar on his right side was chased from the Brown Street apartment of Clara Virginia Wilfong at about 1 p.m. Friday. He jumped from the woman's second-story home and was possibly struck by a car as he fled.

Wilfong, 73, was physically and sexually assaulted, police said. She was found unresponsive in her bed by a family member who entered her apartment at about 12:45 p.m. after several failed attempts to reach her. She was last seen by family members at 11 a.m. that day.

Her death has been ruled a homicide. The manner of death of death has yet to be established.

The suspect is a black male is 35 to 45 years old with a tall, slender build. He had rotting teeth and a 5- to 6-inch scar on his right side that is shaped like the Nike Swoosh logo.

He was wearing black denim shorts, a braided belt and gray Nike Air Force athletic shoes. Police say the suspect frequents the area around South, Baird, Bellows and East Crosiers streets.

Man Arrested in Murder, Rape of Elderly Akron Woman

A Warren man has been arrested in the May 28 rape and murder of a 73-year-old woman in Akron.

Devon Daire Owens, 38, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and rape in the death of Clara Virginia Wilfong, according to a release from the Ohio Attorney General's office.

According to the release, Wilfong was found brutally attacked and unresponsive in her apartment by her granddaughter after not responding to calls or knocks at the door. The granddaughter and other witnesses forced entry and found a partially-clothed male in the bedroom with her. He then fled out a window.

Quick forensic biology and DNA testing aided in the identification and arrest, said the release. After tips, detectives matched Owens' DNA profile to evidence earlier this week, said the release.

He was taken to Summit County Jail and will be arraigned 9 a.m. Wednesday in Akron Municipal Court.

AKRON, Ohio - Police have made an arrest in the murder of a 73-year-old Akron woman.

Police said family members found Clara Virginia Wilfong unresponsive in her bed on May 28. On Tuesday, police arrested Devon Daire Owens, 38, of Warren, and charged his was murder, aggravated burglary and rape.

Akron police were able to identify the suspect with the help of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

“Akron police contacted our BCI crime lab within hours of Ms. Wilfong’s body being discovered. Members of our lab staff immediately jumped into the case and spent hours doing forensic biology testing and DNA testing,” Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray said in a release on Tuesday.

Wilfong was brutally attacked in her Browns Street apartment, Akron police said. Family members forced their way in after she didn’t answer the door, and found the suspect partially-clothed in Wilfong’s bedroom. Witnesses told police he fled out of a window.

AKRON, Ohio - An Akron man was indicted Tuesday for allegedly raping and killing an elderly woman in her own home.
Devon Owens, 38, was charged with rape and causing the death of 73-year-old Clara Virginia Wilfong, of Akron, on May 28, according to Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Walsh.

Akron police said that Wilfong's family members forced their way in after she didn’t answer the door, and found Wilfong unresponsive on her bed and Owens partially-clothed in her bedroom. Witnesses told police he fled out of a window.
Owens faces murder charges, two counts of rape, and aggravated burglary. He will be arraigned on Friday, July 9.
