DA threatens legal action

The DA will consider taking legal action if the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) opts to drop corruption charges against ANC President Jacob Zuma without providing a "satisfactory" explanation.

"... the DA will demand to know its reasons for doing so (for dropping the charges).

"Should the reasons not be satisfactory and accompanied by proper disclosure, we will institute legal proceedings to ensure that justice is served," said Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille in a statement on Thursday.

The NPA was deciding whether to drop 16 criminal charges — one of racketeering, one of money-laundering, two of corruption and 12 of fraud, against Zuma, based on representations his legal team made to it.

"Selected leaks to the press indicate that the NPA is hopelessly compromised because of political interference.

"It appears that the NPA might drop the charges against Jacob Zuma because it fears that Zuma will use his own corruption trial to demonstrate that the NPA was complicit in a political conspiracy against him,"
Zille said.

Irrespective of the role the NPA played in the alleged conspiracy, she said, "... the fact remains that Jacob Zuma has a case to answer".

'Strong grounds to proceed'

Quoting Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Louis Harms, the opposition party leader said there were "strong grounds" to proceed with Zuma's prosecution for the 783 bribes he was allegedly involved in with his former financial advisor and convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik.

"As Judge Louis Harms of the Supreme Court of Appeal noted, in overturning the Pietermaritzburg High Court's 2008 verdict on Zuma's prosecution: 'A prosecution is not wrongful merely because it is brought for an improper purpose. It will only be wrongful if, in addition, reasonable and probable grounds for prosecuting are absent'."

Proceeding with Zuma's prosecution was the NPA's "duty and responsibility", she said.

Earlier this week, Zuma said it was "hypocritical" for opposition parties to pre-empt the NPA's decision.

This was after the DA made submissions to the authority on why the charges against him should not be dropped.

Zuma: I was victim of power abuse

The leader of South Africa's governing party has said he was a "victim of a systematic abuse of power", after a corruption case against him collapsed.

African National Congress chief Jacob Zuma told reporters after the charges were formally dropped on Mond

The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) threw out the case, blaming political interference.

But the main opposition party has mounted a legal challenge to the move.

The development comes barely two weeks before general elections, which the ANC is tipped to win with Mr Zuma as its presidential candidate.

Busloads of his supporters gathered outside Durban High Court earlier as the charges were formally thrown out.

Afterwards the ANC boss said in a news conference, broadcast on national television on Tuesday: "There never was a case against me.

ANC expects big win in South African elections

JOHANNESBURG — Voters lined up before sunrise Wednesday in an election that has generated an excitement not seen since South Africa's first multiracial vote in 1994, and that was expected to propel Jacob Zuma to the presidency after he survived corruption and sex scandals.

Zuma says he is eager to set up a new government that will bring "visible change" to improve the lives of the country's black majority.

His governing African National Congress is expecting an overwhelming victory in the parliamentary election. Parliament elects South Africa's president, putting Zuma — one of the ANC's most popular leaders ever — in line for the post when the new assembly votes in May.

It was hoped the inauguration ceremony of South Africa's first polygamous president this Saturday would be some indication, but it has been reported he will be accompanied by all three women.

The 67-year-old is still married to his first wife Sizakele Khumalo, to Nompumelelo Ntuli, 34, who

Another wife, Kate Mantsho Zuma, committed suicide in 2000, and he divorced Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in 1998, but she remains a close political adviser and has served as a minister in government.

Polygamy is still common in rural KwaZulu Natal, where HNIC Zuma is from.

Teenager gets 169 years for killing spree

A White South African teenager has been sentenced to 169 years in prison for a racist rampage in which he killed four animals.

Johan Nel's victims, all of them black, included a baby girl shot dead in the arms of her mother, who also died.

The killings at the Skierlik squatter camp in January raised the spectre of enduring racism in the 'rainbow nation' 14 years after the end of apartheid, particularly as Nel was only a small child when majority rule arrived.

Now 19, he pleaded guilty earlier this week to four counts of murder and several other charges, leaving open only the question of how long his prison term would be – South Africa abolished the death penalty in 1995 after it was ruled unconstitutional.

Judge Ronald Hendricks defied death threats he received during the hearings at Mmabatho high court to condemn Nel to life terms for each of the four murder charges, and seven years for each of eight attempted murder counts.

Nel showed no emotion as he was sentenced to a total of 169 years, staring fixedly ahead of him.

The judge said that
racism could not be tolerated, and communities had to be protected from people like Nel.
