The suspect in a 13-year-old cold case murder that stumped Portland police for years was arraigned on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty.

Shawntell Moses, 38, appeared in Multnomah County court and faced family members of Kala Peterson, who was found dead near Woodlawn Park in Northeast Portland on Dec. 8, 1995. She was 30 when she was killed.

Moses was arrested in Washington state on March 3 by the Portland Police Bureau Cold Case Homicide Unit. He faces three counts of aggravated murder in Peterson's death.

“I never thought this day would happen, ever,”� said Jill Ishizaka, Kala's sister. "It's not closure -- I'm wondering why she was murdered at all. That's all I want to know, why did th
ey take my sister."

Peterson was found brutally beaten and stabbed near the intersection of NE 11th Avenue and Oneonta Street, close to Woodlawn Park.

The case was investigated by Portland homicide detectives for years but was never solved and eventually became a cold case, Detective Mary Wheat said.

“I think it went cold because at the time there weren’t a lot of people associated with Kala Peterson in the last few hours of life that could put her in the presence of a suspect or suspects,”� Detective Jim Lawrence said.

But late last month, an anonymous tip was phoned in to Crime Stoppers. Four days later, cold case detectives were in Tacoma, Wash., where they arrested Moses in connection with Peterson's death more than a decade ago. Continues

Police make 2nd arrest in cold case homicide

A second man has been charged in the death of a Portland woman found fatally stabbed on a city sidewalk more than 13 years ago.

The Portland Police Bureau said Wednesday that 37-year-old Dana Rankins called detectives from St. Louis on April 13, about two weeks after his cousin, Shawntell Moses, had been arrested. A warrant was issued for Rankins following his interview with detectives and he waived extradition.

Both men are charged with murder in the death of 30-year-old Kala Peterson on Dec. 8, 1995.

The case had been classified as an unsolved, cold case until a tipster phoned Portland police to provide information that
prompted the Moses arrest.
