Convicted Sex Offender Charged in Weekend Murder of Teenage Girl

Cincinnati Police have arrested a convicted sex offender with a long criminal history and charged him with the murder of a teenage girl in Winton Hills Sunday.

The victim is 13 year old Esme Kenny, who went jogging in the area Saturday afternoon. Family members sa
y this is something she did often and that Kenny ran a particular route which took about a half an hour. They reported her missing when she did not return home.

Cincinnati Police units spotted 40 year old Anthony Kirkland in the area where Kenny disappeared around midnight Sunday. He was questioned, and that's when K9 units and helicopters were sent out to search the wooded reservoir off Winton Road, between Dutch Colony Drive and North Bend Road. Kenny's body was found around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Later in the day, 40 year old Anthony Kirkland was charged in Kenny's death. Kirkland is a convicted sex offender who made it onto the Local 12 Wheel of Justice last week because he was wanted in connection with an aggravated burglary where he allegedly stabbed a man with a scissors.

Just this past Thursday, Kirkland allegedly jumped into woman's car and threatened her and three year old son with steak knife. He was also accused of failing to register his address as a sex offender. Kirkland
was convicted in 2007 after trying to force a 13 year old girl to have sex. That same year, he was convicted of holding a grill fork to his 18 month old son's neck. (Why was this thing out in the first place))

Kirkland got out of jail just a couple of months ago.

The man accused of killing 13-year-old Esme Kinney while she was jogging in her Winton Hills neighborhood Sunday has killed before.

In addition, Anthony Kirkland, 40, was expelled last month from a West Side sex offender
program where he was serving a parole term on a separate sex crime, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

He failed to register his address as a sex offender after leaving that program, and a warrant for his arrest had been issued because of it.

Kirkland was ordered held on $5,350,000 bond this morning on charges he killed Esme, a student at the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts who went for a run Saturday and never came home.

Hamilton County Municipal Judge Fanon Rucker set the bond for Kirkland during a brief arraignment. Kirkland pleaded not guilty.

Prisons records show Kirkland was sentenced in 1987 to spend seven to 25 years in prison on charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated arson. He served 16 years and was released on parole Sept. 3, 2003.

The following October he was released from probation, having committed no new crimes.

Three months later he was accused of breaki
ng into a woman’s home and raping her. He was acquitted of that charge.

Most recently, he was on parole for soliciting a 13-year-old girl for sex in 2007, and ordered to live at Volunteers of America. He was ordered to leave that facility on Feb. 27, after he was caught fighting with an inmate, a prison spokeswoman said.

When his parole officer was notified the following Monday, parole officers began looking for Kirkland, who is required to register his address every year – or if he moves – with the sheriff’s office in the county where he lives, the spokeswoman said.

The search lasted through the week, with the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team joining the search on Thursday.

By then, he had already begun a string of crimes, court records show. Continues

Eight Day Crime Spree Ends With Teen's Murder

Cold Cases Police are looking at the man accused of murdering a 13-year-old girl as a suspect in two other murders. 13-year-old Esme Kenny was attacked duri
ng a run in her Winton Hills neighborhood Saturday afternoon. Her body was found early Sunday morning. She was strangled and part of her body was set on fire. That is what has Cincinnati Police looking at two cold cases.

14-year-old Sheree Crawford was found murdered in Avondale in May of 2006. Her body was set on fire. Five weeks later, the body of 45-year-old Mary Jo Newton was found a few blocks away. Both bodies were burned so badly it was impossible to tell how they died or to get dna from likely sexual assaults. Accelerant was used on both victims.

Kirkland has a long wrap sheet that goes back years, but police say his most recent crime spree lasted about eight days and it got more and more violent, until it ended with a girl's murder. Kirkland was kicked out of the facility where he was living as a registered sex offender February 27th for getting into a fight.

Police have also charged Kirkland with three other violent crimes.

Like the shower scene in in the
movie "psycho", Anthony Kirkland is charged with breaking into his ex-girlfriend's Avondale home and jumping out of the shower to stab her new boyfriend with scissors... ten times. Both are in hiding. He surfaced again, four days later, according to police documents. His ex said this time he jumped in her car carrying steak knives violating a protective order. That was two days before 13-year-old Esme Kenney woke up to what felt like the first day of spring. The talented singer and musician went for a jog near home. When the teen, who blogged about playing cello, didn't come home, cops and canines searched. Canines tracking Esme's scene stumbled upon Kirkland in a homeless camp. They quickly tracked his history of violence and they found something else... Esme's watch. Esme's body was found later. She was strangled to death.

Cecil Thomas, Council Member: "We need to look at this and not accept it as unfortunate incident, I'm not going to accept that."

Kirkland and other paroled sex offen
ders stay here at Volunteers of America on McMicken. Thomas said if they are required to register, they should be required to wear a tracking device.

"The city has the authority to look at what legislation can we require to have all sex offenders on a monitor."

If Kirkland had a monitor, perhaps, he would have been arrested before Saturday, the last day of Esme Kenney's bright life.

CINCINNATI -- A convicted sex offender accused of killing a 13-year-old girl is being held on $5.3 million bond.

Sunday, the family of Esme Kenney confirmed that police had found her body after a search that ran into the early morning.

A family member released a statement saying, "Our hearts are broken by this tragic end to a wonderful young spirit. We would like to thank everyone for their support, and ask that donations be made in Esme Kenney’s name to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children."

Detectives arrested and charged Anthony Kirkland, 40, in connection with Kenney’s death. In court Monday, Kirkland pleaded not guilty.

News 5 has learned that Kirkland was kicked out of a halfway house one week prior to Kenney's disappearance, and had two outstanding war
rants for his arrest when he was taken into custody early Sunday morning.

Kirkland is a Tier 1 sex offender who was convicted of importuning in 2007 and sentenced to one year in prison.

According to Cincinnati police, Kirkland got into a fight with another resident at the Volunteers of America halfway house on Friday, Feb. 27.

Police said Kirkland didn’t have any outstanding warrants at the time and the other person involved in the altercation did not want to press charges, so Kirkland was expelled from the facility and put out on the street.

The Volunteers of America said their policy is to notify the authorities when someone is kicked out the next business day, which they did the following Monday morning.

But by that point, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department said Kirkland had been involved in the stabbing of a man on Ridgeway Avenue and a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

When Kirkland’s parole officer was notified of his release on Mond
ay, March 2, the officer began looking for Kirkland since he had not registered with a new address.

Wednesday, March 4, the Sheriff’s Department issued a second arrest warrant for failure to register with his parole officer.

Thursday, officers with the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team began searching the streets of Cincinnati for Kirkland, fearing that he might strike again.

Then on Friday, March 5, Kirkland was accused of threatening to kill an ex-girlfriend and her 3-year-old son. He was charged with abduction, domestic violence, aggravated menacing and violation of a protection order.



Kenney was last seen at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday jogging along Winton Ridge Lane.

Officers said they didn’t believe the girl was in any danger until they found Kirkland near the search area along Winton Road.

"Once we discovered this person of interest, we immediately went to a critical missing, and that's when we in
itiated the Amber Alert process," Lt. Mark Briede said.



Winton Hills police said they located Kenney's body at about 3:30 a.m. in a wooded area near the 5900 block of Winton Road.

Crime scene investigators are continuing to collect evidence to piece together what happened the afternoon Kenney disappeared.

Part of the reason the evidence collection is taking so long is that the crime scene is about 30 yards off the road in thick underbrush.

Kenney was enrolled as a seventh-grader at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts. She was a dual major in vocal and instrumental music. She performed in the choir and was a cellist in the junior high orchestra.

Administrators said that they are devastated by the news. Counselors were on hand at the school Monday morning.

Police: Killer Used Tricks To Destroy Evidence ((It actually bathed?))

Cincinnati Police Chief Tom Streicher has described Anthony Kirkland as a very cunning and intelligent person who is a serial killer.

"A sociopath is how I look at him, and unfortunately a sociopath is what we often find with a serial killer," said Streicher. "And that's exactly what he is, a serial killer."

Streicher described the methods that he says Kirkland would go through to destroy evidence.

"He's a person that obviously burns bodies because it destroys DNA evidence," Streicher said. "That covers up any physical evidence."

Streicher said there is more.

"He has taken the time to clean his body," Streic
her said. "And, in fact, bathed himself with bleach, which can kill DNA evidence and can kill other types of evidence."
Kirkland confessed to the killing of 13-year-old Esme Kenney.

Chief Streicher wouldn't confirm or deny that report, but said, "I can't comment on the confession or whether there is a confession, but I can tell you this, there's overwhelming evidence that points to this man as the person who committed this brutal murder."

Just to the southeast of the Kenney home is the projects. If you look up the street names +nigger you get a lot of hits from new nation news.

There was a nigger named "anwar pugh" who climbed in windows and raped a dozen or so, and stood out for his MO. He was fond of licking his victim's anuses, and I guess that's good because it helped get him caught by dna.

That was just in 2007 that he got sentenced. Her parents surely heard about it. He operated in the projects just a few hundred yard from the Kenney house.

When I first saw this thread and wondered how this could have happened, I read a couple dozen articles. The location of her home and route are pinpointed. The location of her death is hinted at, but is narrowed down greatly by police
and media.

She was only a few hundred feet from her home.

Her home is what made me feel ill.

They were trying to stay hip, and raise this girl a few hundred yards from some of the worst housing projects in that city.

I hope her mother dies slowly of cancer.

He's 'as bad an offender as you can get,' prosecutor says of suspect in 3 killings

Esme Kenney had no idea she was about to become prey.


The 13-year-old left her parents' home March 7 to go for a run around the nearby Winton Hills reservoir.

That's when he spotted her.

The hunter hid in nearby woods watching the 5-foot-4, 100-pound teen jog toward him. He lunged at her, likely threatened Esme with one of the two knives he had, then dragged her into the woods.

There, he attempted to rape her, then strangled her. He tried to cover his crime by using her clothes to set her body on fire. By the time Esme's parents started looking for her 30 minutes after she'd left, the teen was likely dead.

T
hat's what a 12-count indictment released Tuesday against Anthony Kirkland alleges.

"She was a victim hunted down by a predatory animal," Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said.

That predator already had killed once, Deters said. Now, Kirkland is an accused serial killer whose crimes, the prosecutor insisted Tuesday, should result in one more killing - Kirkland's.

"This is as bad an offender as you can get," Deters said in seeking the death penalty.

In addition to Esme, Kirkland is accused of two 2006 killings - Casonya "Sharee" Crawford, 14, and Mary Jo Newton, 45, a mother of two.

All three bodies were burned.

"All are invariably involved in sexual assaults, and he doesn't want to leave witnesses," Deters said.

The best method of self-defense for the community and others who might attract Kirkland's attention is to put him to death, Deters said.

"He needs to be executed."

Sharee's grandmother, Pat Crawford, waited for three yea
rs to hear Tuesday's announcement.

"It's a real blessing," she said of the indictment and possible death penalty.

"I don't want them to seek (the death penalty). I want him to get it. This is Satan possessed, and you are supposed to kill Satan.

"They are kids. She and Esme never knew anything about pain. They were just kids, and all of a sudden, he is invading their privacy."

More bodies?
Kirkland's alleged crimes would elevate him to a level of Hamilton County's worst serial killers, Deters said. And the prosecutor wonders how many more bodies there might have been had Kirkland not spent 16 years in prison for killing and burning a woman in 1987 when he was 18.

"Basically, the only time he's not killing is when he is (behind bars)," Deters said. "If he's not stopped, he'll continue to kill."

Deters was coy about what he considered "very strong evidence" in Newton's case and "overwhelming evidence" in Esme's and Sharee's cases. It's unethical, Deters sa
id, for prosecutors to reveal any confessions other than in court. But the prosecutor strongly suggested that Tuesday's indictments were bolstered by information from Kirkland.

"After his arrest, other evidence was developed which connected (Kirkland) to other cases," Deters said.

Crawford, though, said prosecutors and police who visited her home Tuesday to inform her of the capital indictment said Kirkland had confessed to the killings.



The prosecutor again criticized the judicial system that allowed Kirkland to be released many times, allowing him to commit other crimes.

A 1996 law change allowed Kirkland to be released 16 years after he was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for the 1987 killing of Leola Douglas, 28. After they argued, Kirkland doused her with lighter fluid and set her on fire, killing her.

After his release, he was arrested several other times. He was acquitted of rape, but convicted of other crimes that netted him just over one year behind b
ars.

He was released in October 2008 to an Over-the-Rhine halfway house run by the Volunteers of America, where he enrolled in a sex-offender program. After a late-night fight Feb. 27, though, the agency kicked him out of the West McMicken Avenue center, leaving the convicted sex offender and killer free to roam the streets. VOA didn't contact Kirkland's parole office for days.

By then, Kirkland began a crime spree, including a stabbing, that ended with Esme's killing, authorities said.

Those other crimes won't be prosecuted, Deters said, so prosecutors can concentrate on winning the death penalty.

Another voice was added Tuesday to the chorus of those calling for the VOA to move its halfway house. Last week, the majority of Cincinnati City Council called for it to close. Councilman Cecil Thomas declined to support the majority, but Tuesday, he said the center doesn't belong in its Over-the-Rhine location.

"Cincinnati is a dumping ground" for sex offenders, Thomas said
Tuesday.

VOA leader Chris Lohrman is willing to move, he said Tuesday, but wouldn't talk specifically about the issue.

No deals
In response to Esme's death, the state issued an order preventing parolees from being evicted until parole workers are notified.

A team of workers from the state is expected to arrive in Cincinnati, possibly Thursday, to review the case.

Deters is seeking the death penalty for the charges involving Esme and Sharee as victims.

He won't bargain by allowing Kirkland to plead to a lesser charge in exchange for Kirkland leading them to other possible bodies.

The killings attributed to Kirkland might not end at four.
