![]() Shots Fired At Officer Lead To Murder Charges POSTED: 10:17 am EST December 1, 2008Palatka Officer Unhurt; 3 Under Arrest UPDATED: 6:03 pm EST December 1, 2008 PALATKA, Fla. -- Shots fired at a Palatka police officer Saturday night led to the arrest of three men believed responsible for the shooting death of 65-year-old Cecil Mills, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said Mills was shot Oct. 27 when he interrupted a burglary at his daughter's home on Cherry Drive in Pomona Park. Charles Edward Coring III, Johnny Lutrell Jones and Lamont Antonio Riley, all 24 and residents of Palatka, were charged with first-degree murder. Jones was arrested after Palatka police Officer Danette Evey said he fired on her as she responded to a domestic disturbance call on Mimosa Drive about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. As her cruiser pulled up in front of the home, she heard two shots, one of which shattered the back passenger window. She was not injured but called for backup. The scene was secured and Jones was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm. Police said the home was that of Jones' mother, who said her son threatened that if she called the police, he would shoot the officers. After his arrest, Jones made statements that caused them to contact Putnam County detectives and investigators with the 7th Circuit State Attorney's Office. Shortly after Jones was interviewed, Riley was arrested leaving his home on Sunday. Coring was arrested on Monday. Snitches get stitches. Deputies said Jones and Riley were suspects in Mills' slaying since shortly after the crime. However, they said the men could not be arrested until recently. "We just didn't have the evidence or the probably cause to make the arrests. These are two names that came up real early, within probably 18 hours, and we've been working since. Lamont Riley was just interviewed within the past two weeks on this. Of course he denied knowing anything about it. But it all came together yesterday thanks to the Palatka Police Department," said Putnam County Sheriff's Office Maj. Keith Riddick. Dat's raight, I beez an innercent an sheeit, I'se ain't don nuffin. Jones was held without bond on the Palatka shooting charges, while Riley was held without bond on charges of armed burglary. Coring was arrested on Monday. Authorities expect the grand jury to indict the men in connection with Mills' death.
