Man shot in Hagen

dECEMBER 01, 2008

ONE man was shot dead, and a vehicle tried to run over four people including a pregnent woman in Mount Hagen on Friday, all allegedly related to the leadereship struggle in the province.Provincial police commander Thomas Eluh confirmed the shooting and the attempted run-over of the four people.Mr Eluh said yesterday that the vehicle was impounded by police and investigations are continuing. However, he could not confirm whether the incidents were politically related.A councillor from Jika tribe said the four people were from his tribe but refused to comment further, adding that the issue was sensitive.Sources also said the deceased is from the Nenga tribe, and his body was taken to the Mt Hagen General Hospital morgue.Meanwhile, in the recount, one official said the informals found during the counting amounted to more than 7000 which is 4000 more than first counted in 2007. He also said the Keltiga box was not located in the container. He said former governor Paias Wingti was still leading after the elimination of 16 candidates with a difference of about 21,000. The insider said whoever wins would win by a very small margin as a lot of the ballot papers were informal. With 16 eliminated, there are nine candidates remaining and the recount is expected to be completed this week or early next week. The recount was ordered by the National Court after a successful petition by Mr Wingti.
