Sir Paulias: Support youths in good works

November 17, 2008

THE Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane has appealed for businesses in Lae and PNG to support one of the youth groups in Morobe province during its campaigning on social issues affecting PNG.
Sir Paulias made this appeal in Lae last Friday during the corporate dinner of the Morobe Bikers Charity Club (MBCC) and launch of a 15-day bike-athon from Porgera to Lae.
It was also at this ceremony that he officially launched the Governor-General’s Trust Fund for HIV/AIDS.
He said it felt good especially for young unemployed youths to be engaged in bringing awareness on issues such as HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, violence against women and children, drugs and alcohol abuse, the fight against corruption and law and order issues in the rural areas of Papua New Guinea.
He said everyone should applaud the initiative taken to help the communities throughout the country and urged other young people in the country to also be involved in similar activities.
“I just want more people to be like you to do more of what you do. I appeal to the members of parliament and think they should be very happy for what you do,”¯ Sir Paulias said.
Nelly McLay, a prominent woman figure and advocate of issues affecting woman and children in Lae, shared similar sentiments.
She said there should be respect from adults to recognised young boys who want to do something positive, who put their hands up to tackle social issues affecting the nation and wanted to make a difference.
“We should congratulate them for their bravery in addressing such issues,’ he said
The MBCC comprises more than 300 young unemployed youth who have toured the country on their bikes to spread awareness on cross cutting issues that have plagued this nation.
They will leave Lae this week to start their campaign in Porgera and should arrive in Lae to celebrate the World AIDS Day.
This will be their sixth major tour. The bikers will also be promoting the Governor General’s Trust Fund for HIV/AIDS during their tour.
The Lae city council gave K500 to the cause while K2000 each was committed by the Morobe Provincial Youth Council and the Morobe Council of Women.
