The Kobe District Court has acquitted a 36-year-old woman, who was accused of ordering 10 bottles of champagne worth 180,000 yen without having had any money at a Kobe bar, on the grounds that as she was seriously drunk at the time, she may not have intended to deceive, legal sources said Wednesday. ‘‘Reasonable doubt remains over whether she ordered the champagne with an intention to deceive, as she was in a state of inebriation,’’ Judge Makoto Okada said in handing down the ruling Tuesday.
The woman initially ordered a bottle of champagne at the bar in March, and reordered 10 additional bottles. The bar requested her to pay 200,000 yen in total, but she did not have enough money, according to the ruling.
