Teenage girl 'gang raped and covered in burning caustic soda'

A teenager with learning difficulties was gang raped by up to ten youths who then showered her 'head to toe' with burning caustic soda, a court heard today.

The attackers left the girl 'naked, screaming, crying and in a desperate state' as they ran away laughing, it was alleged.

They had picked on the shy 16-year-old because they claimed she was a 'dirty ho who was asking for it', a court was told.

The girl was left traumatised and severely disfigured by the attack.

Prosecutor Rosina Cottage said she may have been raped because she had recently slept with three men known to the gang.

'She was shy and insecure and with learning difficulties and thought that she would be liked by these boys if she had sex with them.

'Of course, the world can be an old-fashioned place and they did not like her.

'They thought she was, to use the words of a number of these defendants, ''dirty''.'

On January 9 this year Mark Hendricks, one of the men she had previously slept with, allegedly lured her to a unoccupied house in Tottenham, North London, where the other youths were waiting.

Miss Cottage said: 'She had no idea what was in store for her.

'They raped her ..., and when they had enough of her, and she dared to say no, her body was burned from head to toe with caustic soda.

'She was naked and unprotected, and as she screamed they laughed and ran away.'

As the alleged attackers fled, a neighbour heard screams and banging coming from the house.

'When she went in there was a naked woman at the top of the stairs. She was screaming constantly for help. She said that she had been raped.'

A harrowing 999 call made by the neighbour was played to the court in which the girl's howling screams could be heard in the background.

At hospital she was sprayed with water jets to clear the caustic soda from her.

But her injuries were so bad that she was unable to talk for over a month and remained in hospital for several weeks.

In all, half her body was burned, leaving her permanently disfigured. She has been operated on several times and still requires further surgery.

The court heard that immediately after the rape some of the gang gathered at a nearby friend's house where a witness described how they were 'having a laugh, and then started to talk about some madness and being chased down the road'.

When one of the victim's friends telephoned defendant Bradley Daley-Smith, who she suspected of being involved in the attack, he told her that 'she was a ho and she deserved it'.

He added that it was not rape and the boys 'were not going to prison for this'.

Daley-Smith, 21, Bruno Abrantes, 24, Jason Brew, 18, Miguel Almedia, 22, Ismail Opeyemi, 20, Hector Muaimba, 20, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named, all deny two charges of rape and one of grievous bodily harm.

Hendricks was not at the house during the attack and is not accused of any criminal responsibility for what happened, the court was told.

The case, at Wood Green Crown Court in North London, continues.

A GANG raped a girl of 16 — who had a mental age of eight — then poured caustic soda over her, a jury heard yesterday.

Up to ten men, some with hoods over their faces, attacked her and filmed it on mobiles.

The gang — including Miguel Almeida, 22, and Opeyemi Ismail, 20 — allegedly fled laughing as the chemical left her screaming in agony.

The girl was in hospital for months with 55 per cent of her body burnt. Police had to wait more than two months before they could get her account of what happened.

The jury yesterday listened to a harrowing 999 call of the girl’s screams as a neighbour called an ambulance.

The victim was picked on because she previously had coonsensual sex with some of the gang, it was claimed.

Prosecutor Rosina Cottage told the jury: “They thought she was, to use the words of a number of these defendants, a ho — a whore — a dirty ho who was asking for it.”�

A schoolgirl with learning difficulties was gang-raped by up to ten thugs who then threw caustic soda over her.

They left her screaming in agony, with skin peeling off her face and body, as they ran away laughing.

The horrific attack has left the 15-year-old, who has a mental age of eight or nine, disfigured for life and severely traumatised.

Yesterday three of her attackers were convicted of rape after pleading not guilty, forcing the girl to relive her ordeal by giving evidence via video-link.

They sneered in the dock at Wood Green Crown Court, North London, as the Ghanaian-born teenager frequently paused because her wounds were causing discomfort.

The rape happened in January this year in Tottenham after the girl arranged to meet a man she knew. Instead she was lured to see Jamaican-born Rogel McMorris, then 17.

Then at least nine of his friends arrived and the terrified teenager was stripped and repeatedly raped. Finally the youths poured caustic soda over her body in an apparent an attempt to get rid of forensic evidence. She suffered deep burns to her face and neck, chest, and private parts.

The attackers were all members of a gang calling themselves 'Tugs From Around', meaning thugs from several parts of North London.

The jury found McMorris, now 18, guilty of rape. His immigrant status is being investigated. Jason Brew, 19, who was born in the UK, and Hector Muaimba, 20, an immigrant from Angola, were also found guilty of rape. All have previous convictions and will be sentenced next month.

Some of the attackers were never identified, but those convicted were caught by DNA and fingerprint evidence plus data proving their mobile phones were at the location at the time.

Three men have been jailed for raping a 16-year-old girl in an attack in which caustic soda was thrown on her.
The girl, who has learning difficulties, was lured into a north London flat and repeatedly raped.
Rogel McMorris, 18, from Tottenham, north London, was jailed for nine years for rape and grievous bodily harm.
Jason Brew, 19, from Tottenham, was jailed for six years and Hector Muaimba, 20, from Walthamstow, was given eight years for rape and robbery.

Two-hour ordeal

She told the court she agreed to meet a man she knew for sex there because she thought it would make her popular. But during a two-hour ordeal she was repeatedly raped by a group of men. Before they left McMorris threw caustic soda on her.
The girl was in a coma following the attack and has been left permanently disfigured. She is undergoing treatment, including surgeries and skin grafts.

Judge Shaun Lyons said the girl's life has been ruined and she would have to live with major physical difficulties.
Outside court the girl's uncle read a statement on behalf of her family, including her parents, saying: "The past 12 months have been a very difficult time for us as a family.

"The trauma, stress, depression and hopelessness have all been too difficult to bear."
He added: "We know the sentence imposed on the perpetrators of this hideous crime against our daughter, whatever and however we feel about it, will not bring sufficient justice a
nd healing to our daughter."

Det Con Alex Newton said it was the biggest rape case Haringey police had dealt with.
A lack of co-operation by the community made it extremely difficult to investigate, she added.

"It doubled the amount of work to really get to the bottom of it and I don't think we ever really will," she said.
"It feels like no sentence is any justice compared to what the victim has been through."

Rape outrage

THUGS who doused a girl with caustic soda after gang-raping her have escaped with “insultingly low”� jail terms, it was claimed last night.

The 16-year-old victim, who has a mental age of eight, nearly died from the effects of the powerful drain cleaner.

But the laughing teenagers — some of whom filmed the rape on mobiles as she begged for mercy — ran off, leaving her screaming in agony.

Yesterday three of her attackers — the only members of the ten-strong gang to be convicted — were jailed for a total of 23 years.

However each will only serve HALF the sentences minus the amount of time spent on remand.

That means none will spend more than FOUR YEARS in jail.

nKathryn Stone OBE, chief executive of charity VOICE UK, said: “These sentences don’t come close to reflecting the brutality and horror.

“They send completely the wrong message.”�

The girl — still badly disfigured despite repeated surgery — was lured to an empty house in Tottenham, North London, before being repeatedly raped by the gang, some wearing hoods.
Ruined

She still suffers nightmares and panic attacks.

Judge Shaun Lyons told Wood Green Crown Court: “Her life changed irretrievably. In her eyes and her mother’s her life was ruined. It is doubtful what form her life will take and whether she can operate fully as a young woman.”�

Rogel McMorris, 18, from Stockwell, South London, who threw the caustic soda, was sentenced to nine years but will serve just over four.

Rapist Jason Brew, 19, who got six years, will do two and a half years.

Hector Muaimba, 20, will serve just over three years of an eight-year term for rape and an unrelated rob
