5 Shot Dead In Chicago Home Police Say Area Residents Have Nothing To Worry About, Violence Was Confined CHICAGO (CBS) ― Five people were fatally shot Wednesday afternoon inside a home in the Chatham neighborhood, police said. Deputy chief Eugene Williams says all five victims - three men and two women - were in their 20s. Williams also says the house showed signs of forced entry. It appears all of the victims knew each other, and all were African American. CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago reported the incident was called in about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday after a woman attempting to visit the house found the bodies, said police spokesperson Monique Bond. Police did not believe an offender was on the loose and the incident appeared to be isolated inside the one house, Bond said. "We don't think that the neighbors need to worry," she said. "We believe that it's been contained inside this residence, and right now detectives are on the scene talking to neighbors and trying to get as much information as possible to follow up on leads." Police said nothing about a motive. "Basically it's a single family dwelling. There were two floors, with a basement, and all five victims were found on the first floor," said CPD Detective Division Chief Thomas Byrne. Jonathan Williams said he knew all five victims and had just had a barbecue with them Tuesday. "This is too crazy. It's unbelievable," he said. "These are people I'm planning my future with and they're all dead." "It's crazy that someone would kill them over it's looking like money, but at the same time, I gotta say no one would kill everyone for money," he added. Police went door-to-door canvassing for information, and searched the alleys near the crime scene. Investigators say the killings do not appear to be a random act. "It possibly could be four homicides and a suicide," Supt. Weis said. "We don't know. So we have to look and see what we actually have before we can discuss that." Family members of victims continuously showed up at the home to check on the fate of loved ones. Earlier Wednesday evening Cheryl Flowers told reporters police were not giving her any information until they positively identified the victims, but it was clear she feared her daughter was among the victims. She confirmed just after 10 p.m. that her daughter, Whitney, was one of the victims. Fambly members on the scene tell WBBM-TV among the victims is 27-year-old Anthony Scales. Wednesday afternoon's shooting comes on the heels of a particularly violent weekend in the city. Between Friday night and early Monday morning, 36 people were shot in Chicago, nine fatally, and two people were stabbed. The beginning of the week saw continued violence. Over Monday night, four people were killed and eight more injured in seven separate incidents. Tuesday night four people were shot; one of those victims died.

5 slain in Chicago were 'definitely targeted'
CHICAGO Police said Thursday they think more than one person carried out the slayings of five people found dead Wednesday afternoon inside a ransacked house on Chicago's South Side. Authorities have not identified any suspects or determined a motive, but police are confident the killings were not a random act, said Chicago Police Commander Eddie Welch. "They were definitely targeted," he said at a news conference Thursday afternoon at police headquarters. Further, he said it was obvious that whoever carried out the crime spent a lot of time in the house. "There was a lot of damage to this residence, at all levels of this residence," Welch said. (Yeah, TNB tends to do that to a structure, Commander) Police comments on Wednesday that neighbors should not be concerned that a killer or killers were on the loose led to speculation that the crime was a murder-suicide, but Welch said police do not believe that's the case. Authorities are following up a host of leads and have not ruled out any motive, including whether the slayings were or were not gang-related, officials said. Family members have not entered the house to let authorities know if anything was stolen, Welch said. "The bottom line is we need the community's help," said Deputy Superintendent Steven Peterson. Investigators believe all the victims, young adults, knew each other. Their bodies were all found on the main level of the residence. Police also said there may have been a party the day before and they are trying to talk to people who were at the house. The five victims are Lakesha Boss, Whitney Flowers, Donovan Richardson, Reginald Walker and Anthony Scales, the Cook County medical examiner's office said. No ages for the victims were available Thursday afternoon. The slayings came to light at about 3:45 Wednesday afternoon when a woman trying to visit the house found the bodies. The house appeared to have been ransacked, and there were signs of forced entry, police said. The killings come at a time of heightened concern in the city about a recent spate of gun violence. The five deaths brought to 15 the number of people who have been shot to death in Chicago in less than a week. In the days before the discovery of the bodies, more than three dozen people were shot. Many of those shootings were gang-related, particularly those that occurred between Friday night and Sunday leading to growing concern of more bloodshed as the weather gets warmer and more and more people are outdoors. ![]() ![]() ![]() Police have increased patrols and deployed SWAT officers in a show of force aimed at heading off more violence. They have also beefed up their presence in and around schools in the wake of the shooting deaths of more than 20 Chicago public school students. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley plans to meet today with more than two dozen officials from religious groups, police, schools and social service agencies to talk about what's causing the violence and how to stop it. |

New details emerge in the case
'The lifestyle would not let go' of slain teen April 26, 2008 For seven months, Lakesha Doss' family didn't know where she was, who she was with, what she was doing. Their worst fears were confirmed when they learned the 17-year-old was one of five people fatally shot in a home in the 7600 block of South Rhodes Avenue. The bodies were found Wednesday. In one of the worst mass killings in Chicago in years, Lakesha Doss (left), Whitney Flowers (right) and three men were found shot to death Wednesday in a ransacked South Side home. Calling Lakesha "the angel the world needs to know," her aunts Barbara Thompson and Cinnamon Thomas tried to explain how their niece, a "joyous spirit" who loved playing with her four younger sisters, ended up murdered in a house that a source said may have been used as a place of prostitution. "She tried to let go of the lifestyle, but the lifestyle would not let go of her," Thompson said. "There were struggles from influences we knew nothing about." Lakesha worked as a stripper at Arnie's Idle Hour in Harvey with Whitney Flowers, another of the victims, Flowers' family said. Lakesha's aunts said she told them in December 2006 she "did it [stripping] for a week or two" after she ran away from home in October 2006, when she was 15. Lakesha returned home, and family members said she repeatedly received threatening phone calls. They did not elaborate, though Thompson said "outside influences trickled into the house." Thomas and Thompson said they think their niece was concerned about the safety of her younger sisters when she left again in October 2007, a month before she turned 17. Thompson said Lakesha would occasionally call home but didn't discuss her lifestyle. "There were a lot of rumors and talk about that," Thompson said of Lakesha working as a stripper. In Illinois, exotic dancers must be 18 or older, said Susan Hofer, spokeswoman for the state Financial and Professional Regulation Department. If the dancer is under 18, it's child pornography. Three bouncers at Arnie's refused to comment on Lakesha's employment at the club. Arnie's attorney could not be reached for comment. Calls to Arnie's were not returned or were hung up on. Sandra Alvarado, the City of Harvey's public relations manager, said Arnie's is "quiet" and that she wasn't aware of any illegal behavior there. Before running away from home, Thompson said Lakesha was a hard worker who picked up odd jobs, such as baby-sitting for neighbors, to help support the family. "This whole incident is basically another child being killed," Thompson said. "Now you have five families grieving."

Chicago Works To Prevent Repeat Of Deadly Weekend CHICAGO (CBS) ― Police planned to increase patrols and put SWAT officers and specialized units on the streets over the weekend, a show of force aimed at deterring violence like the three dozen shootings that left nine people dead last weekend. "Weather permitting, we will have our helicopter up," said police spokeswoman Monique Bond, who said Thursday night was relatively quiet, with only four shootings, none fatal. Meanwhile, religious leaders said they had persuaded some churches to open their doors in the afternoons and evenings to protect people from gunfire. "We just picked up about four more churches in Austin (a neighborhood on the city's West Side) that's going to open their doors as a safe haven," said Ira Acree, an activist and pastor of the Greater St. John Bible Church. On Friday, Mayor Richard Daley took the unusual step of calling together more than two dozen officials from the police department, schools, social service agencies and religious groups for a City Hall summit on the violence. Afterward, he said it was just the start of a continuing dialogue about how to combat violent crime. A fired-up Daley blasted the gun industry and called on parents and adults to do their part by intervening to help troubled youth and by working to keep others on the right path. "I don't want people to wait for Mayor Daley to call a meeting. I want you to call a meeting in your home with your children and loved ones. I want you to go next door and talk to those children next door. I want the parents of the block to say 'This block will be free of violence,'" he said. It is key for children to be occupied in after-school or other programs so they stay out of trouble, especially when they're not in a classroom, Daley said. Police Supt Jody Weis personally inspected his troops Friday night before they hit the streets of Chicago's South Side neighborhood, kicking off the first weekend of beefed up patrols to combat the recent wave of violence, reported CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago. "We want to let people know that we're not going to allow that flare-up of gang violence that we had last weekend," Weis said. "It's very important for the communities to feel safe, and we want to do everything within our power to make sure the communities remain safe." Before the meeting, some participants talked about possible solutions to end the violence. The Rev. Bruce Wellems, pastor of Holy Cross Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the city's South Side, suggested that adults need to get to know the young people in their neighborhoods. "I think they have to step into the community and accompany these kids," he said. And Tio Hardiman, executive director of CeaseFire, an anti-violence group, said young people need help finding alternatives to the streets. "We need to go right to the corners and find out what some of these young people want to do, identify some employers that are willing to hire maybe 30 from this neighborhood, 30 from another neighborhood and try to get them hired somewhere so then we can get them off the corners." But Daley said joblessness does not justify violence. "When the killing is done, you still don't have a job, in fact, it greatly decreases the chances that you ever ... will have a job," he said. Hardiman said he expected that violence would not be as bad this weekend because of the police presence and other steps by community groups, including his group's efforts to talk to gang members and mediate disputes. Last weekend, there were 36 shootings - at least 14 of which police believed were gang related. But he said he's concerned about possible repercussions from a shooting at a McDonald's on Monday night that left one man dead and four others injured. The area where the shooting took place is believe to be a stronghold of the Gangster Disciples street gang and Hardiman said he's concerned that someone may try to retaliate.

![]() Man In Custody In Murder Of 5, Another At Large Victims Found In Chatham Neighborhood House On April 23 Reporting Derrick Blakley CHICAGO (CBS) ― One suspect is in custody and one is still at large for the deadly shootings of five people in a Chatham neighborhood house last April in what is Chicago's worst mass murder in five years. As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, police announced that Torolan Williams, 22, of 11600 block of South Artesian Avenue has been charged in the murder of three men, a woman and a teenage girl whose bodies were found April 23 at 7607 S. Rhodes Ave. Killed were La kesha Doss, 17, Whitney Flowers, 22, Donovan Richardson, 24, Reginald Walker, 23, and Anthony Scales Jr., 27. The victims had all been beaten before they were shot. "Anytime there's a loss of life, tragedy is felt by all," police First Deputy James Jackson said at a news conference. "Today's news should bring some relief to the families, friends and the community of Gresham. They can take comfort knowing that a dangerous offender has now been taken off the street." As CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports, Jackie Cantron, mother of one of the victims, personally thanked Area 2 Detectives and Chicago Police Brass after Williams was charged with the murder of her son Scales, and four other victims. "It's helping my family so much because we need some closure on this," Cantron said. "Not just my family, but the other families of these victims." Police Chief of Detectives Thomas Byrne said detectives received a tip that helped bring about Williams' arrest. "We got some real good information by somebody doing the right thing, and that's what we need," Byrne said. "We're not there, and we need help." Robbery is believed to be the motive for the murders, Byrne said. The house was ransacked and several valuables were discovered missing from the home, which was rented by Richardson. Among the items taken were white diamond earrings and a silver "Jo-Jo'' wristwatch, authorities said earlier. Detectives are still looking for additional suspects in the murder, Byrne said, and because the investigation is ongoing, he said there are limits as to what can be released. "We felt there was more than one person; we still feel there was more than one person," Byrne said. "For those reasons, we'll be a little tight-lipped with some of our efforts we don't want to compromise it. But yes, we are looking for additional people." Police have said Williams gave them information about the second suspect. Relatives of two of the victims Γ’ Γ’¬ Scales and Walker said they were relieved that authorities have charged someone. "What dollar amount is worth a life, no matter what kind of money, or what it was?" said Anthony Scales Jr.'s uncle, Terry Scales. "No material thing is worth a life, and they took five." "They took a monster off the streets," added Reginald Brown, father of Reginald Walker. "Other people's families had to suffer the same thing; five families have suffered like we did." Nicknamed Don P, Richardson, 25, drove Cadillacs and a Mercedes. Neighbors said the house had lots of visitors. His relatives said he was an "entrepreneur" and a "party promoter" and kept art and jewelry. He and Flowers, 22, had a 2-year-old son, relatives said. Sources said the home also might have been used for prostitution. The violence shocked residents of the typically quiet Chatham neighborhood, but police assured them this was not a random act. "It wasn't something that was random. There is no killer running in the neighborhood," said Calumet Area Cmdr. Eddie Welch."This was an event that was targeted. They were definitely targeted." The suspect, who knew one of the victims, was overheard talking about the murders, and was in possession of a television stolen from the house, the source told the Sun-Times News Group Wire Terry Scales still can't comprehend the sheer callousness of the crime. "This guy knew these people," Scales said. "They know this guy, and he had the audacity to go in and do them lilke this. This is somebody they know, its not a stranger. So that's scary." The suspect gave police information about another man being sought in the slayings, the source said. The second man is not in custody, but authorities are looking for someone the victims' relatives say is known in the neighborhood. Williams was arrested Monday outside Northwestern Hospital, where he had sought help for a stomach ailment. The incident was the worst mass killing in the ci ty since 2003, when a gunman gunned down six people in a South Side warehouse before dying in a shoot-out with police.
