A policeman who owns a West Milford martial arts school used an oath of obedience to coerce a 14-year-old girl student into dozens of sexual encounters and also sexually abused another student, according to police.

Trent Young, 39, a patrol officer with the New York Police Department and owner of Iron Tiger Martial Arts, faces initial felony counts of second- and third-degree rape. Other charges are pending, according to police investigating the case.

In a surreal scene at the school Friday, parents and young students of the man they knew as “Master Young”�”� who had not heard of his arrest were suddenly swarmed on arrival by reporters and TV cameras. Stunned parents quickly grabbed their kids and rushed to leave in their vehicles.

“I’m shocked,”�”� said Mercedes Debrecki of West Milford, who had brought her 7-year-old daughter around 4 p.m. “He’s always been teaching people to defend themselves. He’s always been great with the kids.”�”�

Young, who is married and has a 15-year-old stepdaughter, also gave karate lessons out of his home in Middletown, N.Y., and allegedly violated the students at both locations.

Middletown police said their investigation began Dec. 21 when one of the girls, now 15, reported the abuse.

They said she had been a member of the martial arts school since summer 2004 and was asked by Young to sign an oath when she reached her green belt in 2005. Part of the oath, cited by police, is: “Do you agree to be obedient to your instructor and obey his words?”�”�

Allegedly as part of that oath of obedience, Trent took the girl into a room and had her take off her clothes. While the victim was naked, Young sexually abused her, police said. Young then allowed the victim to dress and told her it was part of the test, they said.

“Young then continued a behavior of pressuring the victim about sex until the relationship turned into a sexual relationship in 2006. She was led to believe that this was part of her oath she took as part of the karate school,”�”� Middletown police said Friday in disclosing that Young was arrested Thursday.

Young had sex with the girl 20 to 40 times until October 2007 at locations including the West Milford studio on Cahill Cross Road and in his Middletown home, police said.

Police also allege that Young had instructed the second girl, now 15, to take her clothes off as part of her obedience oath.

One of Young’s clients, the Link family, who did not want to give their first names, said they had been taking their 13- and 11-year-old sons to the school for about three months. They said they had heard about the arrest, but wanted to come by anyway.

“We have nothing but good things to say about him,”�”� said the father. “He’s innocent until proven guilty.”�”�

His 11-year-old son said he enjoys Young’s class because Young “does the routines with you.”�”� He said Young not only taught him karate, but was a good role model. “He teaches you how to grow up and to be a good person,”�”� said the boy, wearing a white karate uniform.

“He always stresses discipline and respect,”�”� said the 13-year-old, who repeatedly added, “He wouldn’t do something like this.”�”�

Their mother was stunned by the news. “It just takes one person saying something to destroy a life,”�”� she said, recalling that Young recently gave her safety tips for Christmas shopping, advising her not to leave gifts visible in her car.

Donna Atocha of West Milford said she and her husband, Fabian, and their children — a 10-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl — all had been taking lessons from Young at Iron Tiger Martial Arts for more than a year. Atocha was in tears as she spoke on the phone from home.

“I don’t know what to say,”�”� she said. “I know the guy. I’ve been to his house. He’s such a nice guy. I hope to God it’s not true.”�”�

Atocha said Young always was surrounded by students and staff members, and never was alone with either of her children.

“He always had his workers there,”�”� she said. “He never took the kids aside.”�”�

Young, a patrolman in the 26th Precinct, in upper Manhattan, is out on bail — $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

He is a fifth-degree black belt with more than 28 years of experience.

Young is due to appear in Middletown City Court on Wednesday. Before becoming a police officer, he was a New York City schoolteacher.

April Ryerson, 17, of West Milford, who works at a Subway restaurant in the Bald Eagle Square commercial complex, where the school is located, said that over the last year she often saw Young come in to buy food along with a couple of girls. She did not know his relationship with those girls.

“I can’t believe it,”�”� said Ryerson, who remembered Young offering her and another friend receptionist jobs at his dojo. “He always told us school comes first and always told us what was important. This is so shocking.”�”�

Another parent, who did not want her name published, said Young made a good first impression when she enrolled her 4-year-old son last spring.

“He seemed like a very friendly person, very outgoing, very social,”�”� she said. “It’s just really disappointing because I knew he was an officer. If this is going to turn out to be true about him — you think you could trust a police officer. If you can’t trust him, who can you trust?”�”�

An NYPD cop moonlighting as a children's karate instructor was busted for raping a 14-year-old girl after making her sign an "oath of obedience," police said Friday.

Officer Trent Young, 39, had sex with his teenage student 20 to 40 times inside his Iron Tiger Martial Arts dojo in West Milford, N.J., and at his upstate home in Middletown, cops said.

The illegal trysts began last year after Young, who works out of Harlem's 26th Precinct, had the Middletown girl, now 15, sign an oath on receiving her green belt, police said. The pledge included the line: "Do you agree to be obedient to your instructor and obey his words?"

"He said to her, 'You have signed an oath of allegiance. Now I want you to disrobe,'" Middletown Police Lt. Patrick Freeman said.

The pervy cop - a married father of three children, including a 14-year-old daughter - then sexually abused the girl in his dojo's back room and over the next few weeks pressured her to have sex with him, police said.

This spring, Young told another student, a 15-year-old girl, to disrobe in front of him, but she refused, police said.

"He was using his position and his authority as an instructor and a sensei and the added credibility of being a police officer to manipulate them and intimidate them," Freeman said. "He took martial codes and twisted them to abuse these girls."

Young was arrested early Thursday as he was driving to the 26th Precinct stationhouse, police said.

He was charged with felony counts of second- and thirddegree rape and released yesterday after posting a $50,000 bond. Additional charges were pending.

The NYPD suspended Young.

Several parents brought their children to his karate school yesterday unaware that he had been arrested. A white piece of paper posted on the wooden door read: "No classes today, 1-2/28/2007."

"He's teaching children to defend themselves," said Mercedes DeBrecki, the mother of a 7-year-old girl. "I'm totally shocked."

Two More Teens Report Sexual Abuse

An NYPD officer accused last week of raping a teen in his martial arts studio was accused Monday of sexually abusing two other girls. FBI agents arrested Trent Young on federal conspiracy charges for allegedly transporting the teenaged girls across state lines for illegal sex.

Young, 39, of Middletown, had already been charged with state second- and third-degree rape counts for allegedly abusing a student at his Tiger Martial Arts Center in West Milford, N.J.

Federal prosecutors Monday added the federal counts when they said they learned two other girls, 14 and 15 years old, were also abused and at least one was driven from New York to New Jersey for "sexual intercourse."

Prosecutors said the pattern of abuse started in 2005 and continued through December of this year.

In one case, Young allegedly locked a girl in a closet warning her "this doesn't get past us," according to the federal criminal complaint.

Young worked in the 26th Police Precinct in Manhattan and had been an NYPD for nine years, officials said. Investigators said it appears the sexual abuse took place while working his side martial arts job.

The FBI said Young's Web site had claimed he also had worked as a school teacher before becoming an officer. But with the number of alleged victims rising from one to three this week, investigators said they are concerned there could be other victims who still have not come forward.

Investigators said on numerous occasions, Young would force his victims to pose for photos and later "take pregnancy tests." In a search of Young's computer, FBI agents said they seized photos, home pregnancy test kits and a signed document from one of the teens stating she will be "obedient to your instructor and obey his words."

Attempts to reach Young's attorney for comment proved unsuccessful Monday.

Former NYC police officer admits to having sex with underage girls at N.J. martial arts studio

WHITE PLAINS -- A New York City policeman has admitted in court that he brought underage girls to his home and his New Jersey martial arts studio to have sex.

Trent Young of Middletown, N.Y., pleaded guilty late Thursday to taking the girls, ages 14 to 16, across state lines for sex in 2003 and 2006.


The 41-year-old Young faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison when sentenced in January in federal court in White Plains.

He said he twice took girls from his home to his Iron Tiger studio in West Milford, N.J., for sex. In the third case, he took a girl from her Brooklyn home to his home via New Jersey.

Young, who spent nine years with the NYPD, was suspended when he was arrested in 2007.
