Police in Hemet say they've caught arrested a suspect wanted for raping elderly women in the area.

21-year old Kenneth Daniels Jr. of San Jacinto was initially arrested for attempted burglary and resisting arrest, but was later booked in connection with the rapes of two women. One of those women was attacked twice, and the other died of injuries sustained in the attack.

Officers working undercover in the area of the attacks observed the suspect enter the complex where two women had been raped in the past few months. One of those victims was attacked twice, and the other died of injuries sustained in her attack.

Police say the suspect was observed jumping the fence at the address, and matched the description of the serial rapist police have been looking for.

As officers moved in to follow the suspect, police dispatch received a call from an elderly female inside the complex who indicated someone was trying to break into her apartment through a partially open window.

Officers quickly responded to the area and located a black male in a dark hooded sweatshirt walking away at a high rate of speed.

Officers identified themselves and ordered the subject to stop, but he fled on foot eastbound through the complex and out the front gate. Officers apprehended him a short distance south of the main entrance after a brief struggle.

The suspect, identified as 21-year old Kenneth Daniels Jr. of San Jacinto, was initially arrested for attempted burglary and resisting arrest.

Follow up investigation resulted in Daniels being booked for murder with special circumstances, two counts of rape during the commission of a residential burglary, one count of causing great bodily injury during a rape, two counts of forced oral copulation, one count of attempted burglary and one count of resisting arrest.

Based on the serious nature of the charges Daniels is being held without bail.

Monster May Face Death Penalty For Rape & Murder Of Old Women

A 21-year-old San Jacinto man was charged Wednesday with rape and murder counts that could bring the death penalty for allegedly assaulting two senior citizen women in Hemet, one of whom died.

Kenneth Daniels Jr. made his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon, but his arraignment was postponed until Friday morning.

His attorney, Howard Williams, made a motion for evidence to be turned over to his office before the arraignment, and Judge Michael Hider granted the request.

Daniels faces a potential death sentence or life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of murder, along with a special circumstance allegation of murder in the commission of a rape.

Daniels also faces a second rape and an attempted rape charge stemming from the alleged attacks on the two women -- one of whom was targeted twice -- in a gated senior citizens complex in the 500 block of North Santa Fe Street. The crimes occurred on Aug. 21 at 3:10 a.m.; on Oct. 19 at 5:20 a.m.; and Dec. 11 at 4:51 a.m., authorities said.

Daniels additionally is charged with burglary, oral copulation with force, attempted burglary, resisting arrest and producing great bodily injury or death on an elder, as well as allegations of great bodily injury, commission of a sex offense during a burglary and committing a felony on an elder.

Hemet police Lt. Jeff Pinney identified one of the women as Rosemarie Edwin, a 74-year-old wheelchair user, and said she died of head trauma suffered during the attack.

"We have no information that he used a gun," the lieutenant said.

The victim who was attacked on two separate occasions is 63 years old, police said. Her name was withheld.

Daniels was arrested shortly before 2 a.m. Friday by Hemet police officers working undercover at the Oak Terrace Apartments at 551 N. Santa Fe St., where residents must be at least 55 years old, according to Pinney.

He said officers determined that Daniels matched the description of the suspect and began trailing him after watching him jump a fence and head into the complex.

Moments later, the officers were informed that a woman had called 911 and said a man was trying to break into her unit, according to Pinney.

Officers spotted a man in a dark-hooded sweatshirt walking quickly away, Pinney said. Surveillance videotape footage released to the media showed police moving in and collaring the suspect after a brief struggle.

Pinney would not disclose evidence allegedly linking Daniels to the sexual assaults and murder. However, Pinney confirmed investigators have DNA evidence from the first attack.

Autopsy results for Edwin have not been released by the coroner's office.

Security surveillance footage released late last month by Hemet police showed the suspect walking around and leaving the complex. In the videos, he appeared to be a young man of medium height and lean build, wearing a dark- hooded sweatshirt.

The officers who arrested Daniels were part of a task force established specifically to catch the rapist, according to Pinney.
