Two men arrested in sexual assaults
S.J. police allege pair may be involved in as many as 30 attacks

STOCKTON - Police have arrested two men in connection with two rapes in the past few weeks and suspect they may be involved in sexually assaulting dozens of other women in the Stockton and Modesto areas.

For weeks, detectives had been investigating two reported rapes of women involved in prostitution, said Officer Pete Smith of the Stockton Police Department.



Investigators linked those cases earlier this week, and leads from the street led them to Amritpal Singh Grewal, 22, and Kerston Dwayne Brock, 26, who they arrested Thursday morning in connection with the rapes.

Grewal and Brock were booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of false imprisonment, committing lewd and lascivious acts by force, forcible sodomy, kidnapping and rape.

Grewal is being held in lieu of $725,000 bail. Brock is being held in lieu of $400,000 bail.

Investigators believe the pair sexually assaulted as many as 30 women in the Stockton and Modesto areas over the past three or four months.

"They were working together," Smith said. "Both played significant roles in all these crimes."

Smith said the victims are mostly women involved in prostitution and that they were targeted because of their perceived reluctance to report crimes to police. Smith said that assumption was not a safe one.

"They're very wrong if they think these women won't come forward," Smith said.

One of the victims came to police after a passing citizen found her right after she had been assaulted in north Stockton, Smith said.

Police are hoping photos of the men and a description of their vehicle - a black, late-model Honda Accord - will inspire other victims to come forward, regardless of their involvement in prostitution. And the women probably will, Smith said.
