Charges dropped
One of five Jewish teens accused of attacking a Pakistani American was cleared of all charges last week.
According to published reports, a judge determined on July 12 that there was “no evidence”¯”¯ to link 16-year-old Shulomi Bitton with the Midwood attack on October 29, 2006.
Bitton, as well as 17-year-old Yossi Friedman, 16-year-old Benjamin Wasserman of the 5100 block of 15th Avenue, along with two unnamed 15-year-olds, allegedly approached Amber Shahid as he ate an ice cream cone outside the Dunkin’ Donuts at 1524 Avenue M and began shouting at him, calling him a “terrorist motherf—ker.”¯”¯
“You f—ked our country,”¯”¯ they allegedly screamed. “Why are you here?”¯”¯
The suspects allegedly yelled, “Go back to your country”¯”¯ before allegedly lunging at the 24-year-old,
striking him repeatedly in the face and about the body with a pair of brass knuckles, officials said.
The attack left Shahid with a black eye, swollen face and bruises peppering his entire torso, police said.
Although they were originally charged with committing a hate crime,
a grand jury reduced the charges to gang assault in the second degree and menacing in the third degree.
Criminal charges still stand against Friedman, Wasserman and the two 15-year-olds, prosecutors said.
According to published reports, Bitton was studying in Israel when the charges were dropped against him.
