Three University of Minnesota football players were arrested Friday on suspicion of raping an 18-year-old woman, University of Minnesota police said.

Alex Daniels, 20, Keith Massey, 20, and E.J. Jones, 19, were taken into custody after an initial investigation, university officials said. They had not been formally charged as of Friday evening.

Daniels is a junior. Massey and Jones are sophomores.

The reported rape occurred sometime between 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police report, though it wasn't immediately clear where.

The woman was examined at a local hospital Wednesday morning. It was unclear what relationship she had with the players or whether she is a U student.

"After receiving a complaint early this morning, we began an aggressive investigation," university Police Chief Greg Hestness said in a statement.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to the Hennepin County attorney's office for consideration of charges, Hestness said.

University police refused to release further details about the case.

Bill Hanna, editor of the Mesabi Daily News, said there’s been controversy on the Iron Range about out-of-state recruiting at Hibbing, Mesabi and Vermillion community colleges. Athletes have come from Milwaukee, Texas, Detroit and other locales.

“It’s a tension issue, and it has been for a lot of years,”�”� Hanna said. “And then also, there is a certain racial component that’s included.”�”�

In 1991, black football players recruited to play at Hibbing Community College complained of racist threats and incidents. The same year, a group of whites armed with a rifle broke into the Hibbing apartment of some black college students and attacked them. One of the 26 black recruits had been charged in a gun incident, and two were suspects in a rape.

In 1993, a Virginia, Minn., man, along with two friends, went looking for a football player who allegedly raped his 13-year-old daughter. They beat the first black man they found. He was one of 12 black football players recruited to play at Mesabi Community College.

Frustrated with the perennially dismal academic performance of the college’s football players, Simberg this week announced his recommendation to drop the football program effective next school year.

The proposal has caused a stir in the college and across the Iron Range, where aggressive community college recruiting practices and wide-open entrance standards have helped enrollments, team records and racial diversity, but have also led to complaints of increased crime, racial tension and fewer opportunities for local athletes.

Of the 63 players on the Hibbing football roster this past fall, only three were from Minnesota, while 22 were from Florida and 12 from Ohio. Meanwhile, all but five of the players were freshmen, highlighting another of Simberg’s concerns: players do so poorly in the classroom that most leave early, saddled with student loans, and the recruiting cycle begins anew.

Despite lots of remedial help, the team’s grade-point average for the past five years is a lowly 1.8, he said, while the college’s other athletes have stayed above 2.0.

Citing race, public defender asks to move sex assault trial from Hibbing

A former Hibbing Community College football player can’t get a fair trial in that community because of his race and the perception that he was involved in the demise of the school’s football program, his defense lawyer argued Monday in St. Louis County District Court.



Andrew Jonathan Williams, 22, of Milwaukee is charged with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in the October 2006 incident involving an 18-year-old Grand Rapids woman in a college dormitory.

Three other men, who like Williams are black and from other states, are charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in the alleged incident. The four have pleaded not guilty.

Northeastern Minnesota Chief Public Defender Fred Friedman appeared before Judge Mark Starr in Hibbing to argue that Williams’ trial be moved to an area with a more racially diverse jury pool.

In a brief filed with the court, public defenders Lara Whiteside and Scott Belfry wrote, “In a community racially and ethnically as homogeneous as that surrounding Hibbing, the trial of a transplanted Africoon-Americoon beast for sexually assaulting a local Caucasian girl would be unavoidably biased.”�

Friedman filed his own motion arguing that Williams can’t get a fair trial in Hibbing because, he said, there is a history of injustice concerning alleged interracial sexual assaults dating back to the 1920 Duluth lynching of three black men falsely accused of rape.

“This kid is black, and everybody in the courtroom will be white,”� Friedman said in a phone interview after the hearing. “Secondly, people have either read about this case, about football players coming to Hibbing from other parts of the country, or read about the demise of the football program at Hibbing Community College.”�

School officials cited players’ poor academic performance when disbanding the football program in January 2007.

Friedman said he would like the trial moved to the Twin Cities, Duluth or Rochester.

St. Louis County prosecutor Brian Simonson opposes moving the trial. In a court filing, he argued there is no basis for believing that jurors in the Hibbing area are biased; that any alleged prejudicial pretrial publicity cited by the defense is factual, minimal and old; and that the court would always have the option to order the trial to be moved if problems developed during jury selection.

“I’ve handled at least six other felony jury trials in Hibbing where minorities have been defendants or victims; in each of the cases we have experienced no difficulty in picking a jury,”� Simonson said after the hearing.

Starr told the parties he expects to make a decision before Christmas.

These nigs may have done the communities, both academic and local, a great favor in disguise if their monkeyshines have led to getting rid rid of the "college football" program. When academically inferior "colleges" bring in boons, they are almost invariably hard core toughs from urban settings. Once infested, it's hard to get rid of the varmints.

Having the darkies on campus is not only dangerous to students, it's a waste of time. They'll major in "general studies," "sociology," "law enforcement," or "negro studies," and be given successive passes by profs afraid of not meeting the administrators' expectations for "encouraging diversity." This is economically unwise for the instructors. Meanwhile, the local community has to worry about everything from their safety at home to the advisability of taking short trips to convenience stores or atms.

Judge Denies Change of Venue for Trial of Sexual Assault Suspect

HIBBING, Minn.—A former college football player in Hibbing will not be allowed to move his sexual assault trial on the basis of race.

Andrew J. Williams of Milwaukee is charged with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in the October 2006 attack on an 18-year-old Grand Rapids woman in a dormitory. Williams is black and the alleged victim is white.

The judge blocked the request because he disagreed that Williams couldn't get a fair trial in Hibbing.

Another hearing in the case is scheduled for next month.
