A heartless crook was captured on video punching and then knocking down a 62-year-old Catholic school teacher as she arrived for work - all so he could steal her purse, cops said.

The dramatic footage shows the young assailant ambushing the helpless victim from behind as she opened a gate to the Good Shepherd School in Marine Park at about 6:40 a.m. Monday.

The suspect punches the startled woman in the face, knocking her through the gate and onto the ground. As she shields herself with her hands, the man snatches two bags and runs off.

The heartless punk who punched a beloved 62-year-old Brooklyn Catholic school teacher in the face to steal her purse is under arrest and has been linked to at least six other cowardly robberies, police said.

Eric Ferguson, 18, ambushed Patricia McGowan outside Good Shepherd School in Marine Park early Tuesday, attacking
her from behind and pushing her through a metal gate topped with a cross as he ran off with her bag.

The sickening attack - captured on surveillance video - triggered a massive search for Ferguson, a juvenile delinquent who is now facing charges for as many as four Brooklyn purse snatching and two Chinese food delivery robberies, including one in which the deliveryman was stabbed, police said.

Ferguson, who lives in Sheepshead Bay, was taken into custody at 6:30 a.m. at a friend's house in the Bronx and is being questioned at the 61 Precinct.

Ferguson had been arrested just last week for driving a stolen green minivan in Brooklyn. He was pulled over on June 4 after he was spotted in a vehicle that was reported stolen on May 24, a police source said.

A Brooklyn judge released Ferguson on his own recognizance so his reign of terror - which started on May 16 with a purse-snatching - was allowed to continue.

But Ferguson's name and photo were added to the NYPD's real-time cr
ime center database along with the stolen's van license plate, allowing cops to link him to a stolen credit card that had been used to buy gas in Yonkers, the source said.

Cops were then able to show that photo to McGowan and one of Ferguson's other victims, and both women were able to identify him as their attacker, the source said.

Ferguson - who spent time a juvenile detention center in Yonkers - was arrested wearing the same pair of Nike Air Force One sneakers that had been purchased with a credit card stolen from a woman he robbed on May 30, police said.

He also confessed to robbing a pair of Chinese delivery man by placing orders to lure the victims to his home in order to steal the food and cash, the source said.

Ferguson and a friend robbed and stabbed one of those deliverymen on June 9 - the day before he heartlessly attacked McGowan.

McGowan was opening a gate to the school at 6:40 a.m. when Ferguson hit the startled computer teacher in the face, slamming her th
rough the gate and onto the ground.

As the terrified teacher shielded herself with her hands, Ferguson snatched her purse and ran off, leaving McGowan sitting on the ground, holding her face.

Ferguson stole the teacher's car, a 2000 Toyota Corolla, but ditched it after driving a few blocks.

"What a shock," said Tom Smyth, 61, the custodian at the elementary and middle school who first saw the tape on the morning of the attack. "I was really upset."

McGowan, who has taught at the school for 43 years, was treated at a hospital and released, her face swollen where Ferguson punched her.

She was unable to attend the school's eight-grade graduation yesterday, instead staying at her Staten Island home and changing the locks to her front door.

"She was really, really attacked," said Msgr. Thomas Brady of the Good Shepherd Church. "She's a very peaceful, quiet person who didn't deserve to be hit the way she was hit."

The cowardly punk who punched a 62-year-old Catholic school teacher in the face and stole her purse was arrested Friday - and promptly linked to six other robberies, police said.

, cops said. Surveillance video captured the mugger attacking her from behind and pushing her through a metal gate topped with a cross before running off with her bag.

McGowan, who has taught at the school for 43 years, suffered bad bruises on the left side of her face. Her left eye was blackened and bloodshot, and her left cheek was swollen and purple from her eye to her jaw.

The sickening attack triggered a massive search for Ferguson, a juvenile delinquent facing charges for as many as four purse snatchings and two Chinese-food delivery robberies, including one in which the deliveryman was stabbed, police said.

Ferguson, who lives in Sheepshead Bay, was taken into custody at 6:30 a.m. at a friend's house in the Bronx. He was expected to be arraigned early today on charges including robbery, assault, larceny and car theft.

"I was so scared," said one of his victims, who asked that her name not be printed.

The woman was walking along Avenue U at 6:45 a.m. on June 2 when a man who was following her suddenly reached for her bag, she said.

"He pushed me, and I fell on my face and elbow," the woman said in Russian. "He dragged me with the bag. . . . The bag's strap [broke] and remained with me, and he took the bag."

"I'm afraid to walk down the street now," said the woman, who lost $100 in cash and a credit card that cops said Ferguson later used for a shopping spree. "I don't want to think about him - I want to forget the story like a nightmare."

Ferguson - who spent time at a school for troubled kids in Yonkers - was arrested wearing a pair of Nike Air Force 1 sneakers bought with a credit card stolen from a woman he robbed on May 30, police said.

He confessed to robbing a pair of Chinese-food deliverymen,
one of whom he stabbed, on June 9 - the day before he attacked McGowan.

"She's a wonderful, dedicated teacher," said Good Shepherd Principal Anthony Paparelli. "She's doing well, [but] she's still in a lot of pain," said Msgr. Thomas Brad

The mother of the heartless teen who punched a 62-year-old Catholic school teacher in the face as part of a one-man robbery spree apologized Saturday for her son's despicable crimes.

"To Ms. McGowan from my family, I'm sincerely sorry and I apologize," said Nadine Rheubottom, whose son Eric Ferguson was arrested early Friday. "I hope she feels how sincerely sorry I am."

Police said Ferguson, 18, ambushed Patricia McGowan outside the Good Shepherd School in Marine Park, Brooklyn, Tuesday morning, grabbing her bag and
shoving her through a metal gate topped off with a cross.

"My son did do this crime to her - it's there in black and white," Rheubottom said. "I love my son, but what he did was reprehensible."

The cowardly attack - captured on surveillance video - was one of at least six robberies Ferguson committed since May 15, police said. Ferguson - who confessed to many of the attacks - was arraigned Saturday on a slew of charges, including six felony counts of robbery, five counts of assault and 10 counts of grand larceny.

Brooklyn judge Michael Murphy agreed to hold Ferguson on $200,000 bond or $100,000 cash. He could face more than 20 years in prison if convicted, prosecutors said.

"He was let down by the schools and the criminal justice system," Rheubottom said outside her home in the lower East Side. "Eric was never a bad kid while growing up - he was mama's little man."

Ferguson said her son spent time at the Leake and Watts Services, a school for troubled yo
uth in Yonkers. It didn't help. She filed an order of protection against her son in August when Ferguson kicked in her television set. He had been living with his grandmother in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.

Ferguson was busted the previous week for driving a stolen minivan, but a Brooklyn judge released him on his own recognizance, and he continued to prey on the public. His targets of choice were defenseless women and Chinese-restaurant deliverymen, one of whom he allegedly stabbed with a broken bottle.

McGowan, a computer teacher who has worked at Good Shepherd for 43 years, was unable to attend the school's eighth-grade graduation Friday. Bruised on the left side of her face, she confided to her neighbors that she's still upset by what happened. "She's all shook up, I just spoke to her," Theresa Mineo said Saturday. "It's terrible. She's a great lady."

A serial mugger caught on video beating a 62-year-old beloved Brooklyn Catholic school teacher was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday.

Eric Ferguson, 19, showed no remorse as Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice William Garnett sent him to prison for a series of brutal robberies.

None of the Ferguson's six victims, including Catholic school teacher Patricia McGowan, was in court when Ferguson's punishment was handed down.

"I don't want to comment," McGowan said when contacted after the hearing.

Ferguson's one-man crime spree was punctuated by the June 2008 mugging of McGowan outside the Good Shepherd School in Marine Park.

The crime was caught on surveillance video and showed Ferguson punching McGowan in the face and ripping her purse from her hands.

The robbery was so shocking, Ferguson's own mother called it "reprehensible" and publicly apologized to McGowan.

Ferguson faced a maximum of 25 years in prison, but copped a plea for a lower sentence.

Prosecutors said all the victims, all from Brooklyn, approved of the plea deal.
