Fugitive black panther Toronto librarian gets 30 days for shooting U.S. cop
Joseph Pannell
TORONTO - The saga of an American who spent 39 years on the run, most of it hiding under an assumed name in Mississauga, Ont., for the shooting of a Chicago police officer ended Friday in a U.S. court, where he was sentenced to
30 days in jail, two years probation and a $250,000 fine, a Chicago newspaper reported.
Joseph Pannell, who lived in Canada for 17 years under the name
Gary Freeman, gave up fighting his extradition to the U.S. earlier this month under the plea bargain and pleaded guilty to aggravated battery for shooting police officer Terrence Knox in 1969.
"I wish the events which led to Mr. Knox's injuries had never occurred,"
Pannell said in court, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
